Sunday, November 29th, 2009

LAKE ARROWHEAD, CA – Do I know cold? Oh, I know cold all right. After all, I grew up in Minnesota and outside of maybe North Dakota and Alaska there’s no nastier cold weather anywhere in the U.S. than in the Land of Ten Thousand (frozen) Lakes. Click to continue »

PERRIS, CA – In the fall of 2006, the Fontana Summit and Perris Citrus Hill high schools opened. And the brand new schools scheduled their first-ever football game against each other on September 8th at Citrus Hill.

For Summit, the game was ugly. A 51-0 spanking. Summit Head Coach, Tony Barile, never forgot that game.

It would be another three years before the two teams would meet again. Again at Citrus Hill. And again a high scoring affair. But this time, the results had Barile smiling.

And brandishing a bright yellow slingshot after the game. Click to continue »

YUCAIPA, CA – Brittany Stone remembers the eyes starring at her and the silence as she lined up for her first kick. Nervous? Oh, yes, she said.

The Rialto Carter football team desperately needed someone – anyone – to accurately kick extra points and short field goals. Some guys tried, but didn’t measure up to what the coaching staff expected.

So when the Carter coaches heard of this 14-year-old freshman girl with a strong leg, they said let’s see what she can do. The coaches gave her an audition. Her audience? The entire team. All 87 players.

“All the guys were watching and I was nervous,” said Brittany. “But I made the kick right down the middle.”

YUCAIPA, CA – Cheerleaders cheered, a large and boisterous football and homecoming crowd applauded, and Holly Marskbury beamed her radiant smile.

And the 17-year-old senior had much to smile about. For Holly was chosen as the Yucaipa High 2009 Homecoming Queen during half time coronation ceremonies of the Yucaipa versus Rialto Carter football game, Friday night.

“I’m very shocked and it’s an honor to be homecoming queen,” Said Holly, who is a four-year member of the varsity swim team, and an officer of the school’s Block Y program.

After graduation, Holly plans on attending a four-year university and ultimately pursuing a career in nursing or sports medicine.

But for now? “I’m very happy,” she said as admirers flocked around her, camera bulbs flashed, and reporters with pens in hand came to interview the newly crowned Yucaipa royalty.
