Cursed camera envy

Photos of the Summit (boys) SkyHawks and Rialto girl’s basketball teams that both won Southern California Regional Division II championships. Fontana and Rialto are neighboring cities that have strong basketball programs.

YUCAIPA, CA – Last Saturday I photographed the Fontana Summit boy’s basketball game against the Lincoln Hornets of San Diego for the Southern California Division II championship at the USC Galen Center.

I came away with what we in photojournalism call, “camera envy.” Actually, by the time the game ended, I had a raging case of it.

I sidled in and sat down amongst six other photographers along the baseline of the Summit basket. It was like I was driving a Chevy Impala (a very nice car) and had pulled into a parking lot in Beverly Hills full of Lexus, Mercedes, BMW’s, and even a Lamborghini or two.

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

The Summit High SkyHawks came from 16 points down to overtake the visiting Palos Verdes Peninsula Panthers to post a 79-74 victory and advance to the California State Tournament Division II championship, Saturday, March 26, at the Galen Center on the campus of the University of Southern California. FONTANA, CA – Summit High School’s basketball players have enjoyed many exciting victories in recent years, but Saturday night’s electrifying triumph in the third round of the state tournament was the biggest one of them all.

The SkyHawks, trailing almost the entire game, used the heroics of junior guard Devon Alexander to pull off a spectacular comeback in the second half for a thrilling 79-74 victory over Peninsula in front of a sold-out crowd at the Summit gym.

With the score tied at 74-74, Alexander’s three-pointer with 12 seconds left gave Summit a 77-74 lead, and then he made a huge steal defensively. After a time out, Alexander was intentionally fouled by Peninsula and he sank both free throws to clinch the game.

“I’ve been through this kind of situation before, but nothing feels better than this,” said Alexander, who scored all 17 of his points in the second half, including 12 in the fourth quarter.
