Men’s Fastpitch Tournament Returning to Yakima, Washington

Tuesday, October 30th, 2018

YAKIMA, Wash. – For way to long Yakima – once a hotbed for men’s fastpitch softball – has gone without a men’s fastpitch tournament. But that is going to change in 2019 as Yakima resident, player, coach and manager, Satero Ramos, has taken the initiative to restart the tournament scene, along with the support of the Yakima Parks & Recreation Department.

“I am having a men’s tournament here in Yakima next year, May 4th and 5th, for the first time in over six years,” said Ramos. “Yakima has a rich history of men’s Fastpitch and I’m trying to bring it back. I’ve been playing the game since 1975. It’s a NAFA affiliated tournament. Benjie Hedgecock (NAFA Executive Director) and Jim Williamson (NAFA founding member and Washington state director) are helping with the logistics.”

The tournament not only benefit’s the men’s game but it helps Yakima youth as well. Ramos said the tournament will help fundraise for the non-profit baseball and softball facility, Baseball Advantage Yakima Dirt Dawgs youth age divisions 10-under and 16-under. Ramos is a 10-year board member of the organization.

. – The Casa Trejo Bombers of Yucaipa, Calif., outscored its foes 41-to-12, had four players hit over .400, and had a .381 team batting average with 10-of-12 batters smashing the ball over the .300 mark.

As anyone familiar with men’s fastpitch softball knows, such stratospheric numbers lead to lots of wins.

And win the Bombers did in claiming the Silver Medal at the North American Fastpitch Association (NAFA) Masters West World Series, age 40-plus Gold Division with a 4-1 record in Carson City, Nevada, Sept. 14-16.

Manager Ralph Roybal credited his players – a blend of local talent, and players from Arizona and Mexico – for peaking at the right time and bringing the second-place trophy home to sponsor Ruth Trejo Garcia and her Casa Trejo restaurant on County Line Road in Yucaipa.

This is the second consecutive year that the Bombers have placed runner-up in a NAFA Masters men’s World Series that features top-rated teams from the United States and Canada.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – After WAH reached the semifinals of the Palm Springs Classic men’s fastpitch softball tournament on Sunday afternoon, pitcher ROB SCHWEYER was essentially handed the ball with the bidding, “now take us to the finish line.”

And over the final two ball games, the Canadian-born right-hander was near perfect in allowing but one hit over 11 innings in defeating the A1 Rockies 2-0 in the semis, and the Budmen 2-0 in the championship.

His totals on the day tell of his dominance: Against the Rockies he fired a four-inning no-hitter with nine strikeouts and three walks. About 35 minutes later, he returned to the pitching circle and shackled the Budmen on a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts.

    Shutting Down Ottoinfocus

    Wednesday, November 15th, 2017

YUCAIPA, Calif. – I want to thank all who have visited and contributed to my blog over the years by sending me story ideas, press releases, tournament and league information, fliers and photos. I humbly thank you for your support.

I have enjoyed writing, photographing and blogging about the great game of men’s fastpitch softball, but other interests on my “bucket list” are demanding attention, so on Dec. 1, I will be shutting down the blog.

However, I encourage my loyal supporters to send your fastpitch news to Al Doran’s
    alsfastball.com and Jim Flanagan’s
    fastpitchwest.com.

As many of you already know, both websites do a wonderful job of promoting and getting the word out about our great game.

And for Facebook followers, “Those Were The Days (of) Men’s Fastpitch Softball,” does a terrific service in reliving fastpitch days of yore for us oldtimers.

    Thank you,
    Bob Otto

Casa Trejo Bombers honor late patriarch by taking second in NAFA Masters World Series

    Tuesday, October 17th, 2017

YUCAIPA, Calif. – Casa Trejo restaurant is known throughout much of Southern California for serving fine Mexican food. Oh, and one other thing: it supports championship caliber men’s fastpitch softball.

Ralph Trejo, Sr., opened the restaurant over 20 years ago and soon after he began sponsoring men’s fastpitch teams. Success was immediate with some pretty lofty accomplishments over the years.

In 2007, the Casa Trejo So. Calif. Bombers finished second in the prestigious International Softball Congress (ISC) World Tournament in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.

Now 10 years later, the Bombers once again achieved an incredible accomplishment on the national stage by taking runner-up in the eight-team Silver Division of the North American Fastpitch Association (NAFA) Masters World Series in Carson City, Nevada on Sept. 15.

    SEASON DEVOTED TO PATRIARCH

Ralph Trejo, Sr. sponsored men’s fastpitch softball teams for over 40 years. Trejo passed away in 2016. His Casa Trejo Bombers ball club dedicated the 2017 season to his legacy and finished it superbly by taking second place in the North American Fastpitch Association (NAFA) Masters World Series in Carson City, Nevada, Sept. 15. But Trejo, the patriarch of the team, died nearly a year ago. However, his passing motivated the Bombers to make this season special in honor of Trejo’s devotion to the sport and to his team.

“Ralph Sr. has sponsored our master’s (age 40-over) team for about ten years,” said manager Ralph Roybal. “We dedicated the season to Ralph. Bringing home some hardware meant everything to us.”

For many teams, once the sponsor is gone, the team folds. But not so with the Bombers. Trejo’s daughter, Ruth Trejo-Garcia, continues running the restaurant, and sponsoring the team. Just as her father would have wanted.

“It’s the love of the game that he had, and wanting to keep it going for him,” said Trejo-Garcia. “My dad would have been excited about the guys winning, but he would have expected it. He always expected the best from his guys.”
