City of Montebello, Calif. welcomes men’s fastpitch softball

wolfpack.17.Mich.207web Fastpitch softball is alive and well in Montebello.

CITY OF MONTEBELLO, Calif. – David Sosnowski didn’t know a whole lot about men’s fastpitch softball when he got an inquiry about starting a city league a year a go.

But as the sports coordinator for the City of Montebello Park & Recreation Dept., he soon found out it’s popular for competitive athletes wanting the challenge of facing a fast-pitched softball, rather than the slow-pitched variety he was accustomed to.

“Fastpitch was a learning experience for me,” he said. “One team called asking about a league because they really wanted somewhere to play and we had the fields for fastpitch. It’s gone great.”

The league started in June of 2013 with seven teams competing, and is ready to begin its second season. Games will start on Sunday, April 27th and run for 12 weeks with an additional week of playoffs.

In fact the league has gone so well that Sosnowski is considering offering a Thursday night league if there’s enough interest.

The league is classified as open to any team wanting to play on Sunday mornings, he said. Games are played at Montebello City Park with game times of 9 a.m., 10:30 and 12:30 with a 1:25 time limit.

“We are open to everyone,” Sosnowski said. “We have really experienced teams and some beginners.”

Last year the championship game lasted about three hours after being tied 1-1 after seven innings and was won by Bay City Deli. Sosnowki added that teams and players come from the surrounding cities of Burbank, Glendale, Pico Rivera and Covina.

When the league finishes around July, the city will take a break and then start the league up again in September, Sosnowski said.

Additional teams can be accepted, and if a player needs a team to play on, Sosnowski will try and find a ball club in need.

“We had seven teams but we can accept more because we have the fields all day Sunday,” he said. “Teams are always short a player. We can get the (player) information and direct that to team managers.”

Sosnowski said that when game time arrives, the fields, the umpires and the scorekeepers are poised to begin.

“The games are on time and everything is ready,” he said. “We pride ourselves in that.”

Bob, Good to hear about this league.

This is another example showing that if teams are organized, there are plenty of men wanting to play fastpitch!

The current players and fastpitch teams need to make more of an effort.

Hi Rich, I’m considering trying to find a team to pitch part time for in the league…if they will take a 65-year-old, over the hill chucker! Great to hear from you.
