Rice Lake knocks off Fargo to take Hollywood tournament

chaparro.erick Erick Chaparro, 21, had a 3-1 record and pitched a no-hitter in helping the Rice Lake Orangemen win the 10th Annual Hollywood Days Men’s Fastpitch Tournament.

WATERTOWN, Minn. – Rice Lake’s bats, arms and gloves were in solid form and as a result the Orangemen won the 10th Annual Hollywood Days Men’s Fastpitch Tournament, June 21-22, at the Hollywood Sports Complex in Watertown.

The Orangemen defeated the Fargo Bombers 5-2 behind the three-hit pitching of 21-year-old Erick Chaparro, who walked four and struck out five to lead Rice Lake to its second tournament championship in consecutive weekends.

The Orangemen also won the Rice Lake Aquafest Invitational, June 13-15, the first such title for the ball club in the 36 years of the event.

Fargo stuck Chaparro with his lone loss (5-4) on Saturday in round-robin play, but the right-hander from Maracaibo, Venezuela bounced back in fine form in the second meeting.

“He threw much better the second game,” said Orangemen manager Travis Thompson, in his first year leading the ball club. “Erick has a lot of heart, drive and fire.”

But Chaparro didn’t win the game alone. He had some offensive help in the likes of Brian Thill, who was 3 for 3, Brian Leonard 2 for 3, and Brandon Schwan, who had a booming double. And Chaparro, who also swings a good stick, was 2 for 4.

Thompson said he was pleased with Thill, who bats in the number eight spot, but with his speed, becomes a lead off batter in the lower order. And Bryce DuCharme batting lead off, had a good tournament, too, added Thompson.

“They are both left-handed and fast,” he said. “They can bunt and steal and definitely ignited our offense this weekend.”

Rice Lake finished Saturday’s action with a 2-1 record, and on Sunday, downed Tin Cup of St. Paul, 2-1, to reach the finals. Chapparo shackled St. Paul with a no-hitter, while walking six.

Right-hander Dan DuCharme, picked up from Bol’s Lanes, also picked up a win, to help carry the pitching load that has been stressed with stalwart Bryan Lathrop sidelined for the year with an injury.

“He had hip surgery in January and is out for the year,” said Ronn Kopp, who helps manage the Orangemen, adding that Thompson is doing a good job managing the ball club and keeping the roster consistent.

With Lathrop out, Chaparro is counted on carrying the pitching load, Thompson said, with additional help coming from picking up a pitcher when needed.

And that is evidenced by the fine performances by DuCharme; and Mike Peterson and Josh Bottolfson, who both were 1-0 at the Cushing, Wisc. Tournament where the Orangemen finished runner-up.

And at the Aquafest, Rice Lake picked up South Dakotan Jason Yetterness, who was perfect at 2-0.

“It’s going to be pretty much Erick and we will fill in when we need help,” Thompson said.

Meanwhile, Fargo – perfect on Saturday at 3-0 – knocked off Odin (Minn.) 2-1 in Sunday’s playoffs to take on Rice Lake. For Fargo, Brent Plante, Tyler Klein and Justin Feist each had a hit off Chaparro. And the trio of Jace Holm, Jason Yetterness and Josh Yetterness hurled the game for Fargo, with Holm taking the loss.

As for the Hollywood Sports Complex and the handling of the tournament, Kopp gives it a thumbs-up.

“Umpiring was top notch as were the tournament directors (Joe Swartzer and Greg “Chopper” Lammers),” he said. “The crew worked hard to put up canopies for shade on the field, and the bar-restaurant is very nice, serving excellent burgers and fries.”

The next tournament scheduled at the Hollywood Sports Complex is the 35th Annual Chopper’s Hollywood Tournament, July 11-13.
