PARANA, ARGENTINA – In his first three at bats, Gregg Garrity hadn’t done much. In fact, Canada’s cleanup hitter was 0-3, and had popped up, grounded out, and hit into a double play.

But like all good hitters, eventually he’s going to hit the ball. And in his final at bat he did. In the most dramatic of ways.

In the top of the seventh inning, Canada trailed the USA 3-1 and was down to its final at bat with two out when Garrity stepped into the batters box. And with one swing of his bat, he blasted a home run over the centerfield fence with two runners aboard to give Canada the lead.

Canadian pitcher Paul Koert survived a treacherous bottom half of the seventh to give Canada a 4-3 victory that keeps Canada perfect in the IX Pan Am games at 5-0 atop of the standings, while the USA falls to 2-3.

USA threatened with bases loaded, but Koert, a left-hander, worked his way out of the jam by getting a ground out and fly ball to end the game

USA took a 1-0 lead in the third on an infield error, but Canada bounced right back in the fourth to tie it on Andy Skelton’s home run over the centerfield fence.

Then in the bottom of the sixth, the USA surged ahead by scoring twice on Nick Mullins RBI single, plating Josh Johnson, who doubled to lead off the inning. Then Pat Sagdal hit a ground ball to shortstop that drove in Mullins with the second run.

That brought the game to the fateful seventh.

USA’s Tony Mancha, who went the full seven innings, started well enough by getting two ground outs to start the inning. But Mathieu Roy (3-for-4) and Jeff Ellsworth (1-for-3) hit back-to-back singles to keep Canada’s hopes alive.

And in so doing, gave Garrity the opportunity to do what every fastpitch hitter dreams of: hitting the game-winning home run.

USA collected eight hits, led by Mancha and Matt Palazzo with two hits each, and Chris Miljavic, Frank DeGroat Jr., Johnson, and Nick Mullins (RBI) all had a hit a piece.

Canada had nine hits, with Roy the leader going 3-for-4, and Derek Mason was 2-for-2, along with one hit each from Ellsworth, Garrity (3 RBI), Skelton (RBI), and Jason Sanford.

Mancha (1-2) allowed four earned runs on nine hits and two home runs, while walking four and striking out six.

Canada used four pitchers in the contest, with Skelton picking up the win with 2/3 innings, allowing just one walk.

Devon McCullough started, went 2 1/3 innings, giving up three hits, an unearned run, with two walks and two strikeouts.

Derek Mason came on and pitched three innings allowing two earned runs on four hits, and Paul Koert finished with one inning, allowing one hit, with a strikeout and walk.
