MIDLAND, Mich. – Midland has long played host to championship tournaments in men and boys’ fastpitch softball. As recently as 2010 and 2012, Midland hosted the International Softball Congress (ISC) World Tournament.

And once again – led by the Midland Explorers Booster Club – the city will roll out the welcome mat, July 30 to Aug. 2, when three Amateur Softball Association (ASA) national championships will be held at Emerson Park for the boys, the young men’s age 23-under, and the Masters 40-older divisions.

“All the divisions promise to be very competitive,” said David Lach of the booster club, who also serves as the tournament director in a press release. “We wanted to provide ‘fastpitch dads’ an opportunity to spend a long weekend playing adjacent to their sons in a national championship.”

CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR BOYS OF ALL AGES

In the boys’ tournament, five divisional championships are offered for ages 18-under, 16-under, 14-under, 12-under and 10-under.

The ASA has made a couple of changes that make the tournament even more attractive for the boys’ teams.

“Starting in 2015, there is an ASA code change that structures the boys’ national championships as a four-game guarantee,” Lach said. “Teams will draw two pool play games, which will determine seeding for a double elimination championship bracket.”

    A TEAM FOR EVERY BOY

And it gets even better. For boys that don’t have a team to play on, a team will be found for them.

“Parents are encouraged to contact Don Petro to be connected with a coach and team,” Lach said. “We want to provide young American players an opportunity to play in a boys’ national championship. So don’t be shy, please contact us.”

Lach adds that the Midland fastpitch community has set an ambitious goal of organizing three local teams for each of the boys’ divisions, down to the 12-under.

“We have nearly ten coaches identified, already,” he said.

There’s another arrangement that sweetens the deal even more. The boys in the 18-under division can also play in the 23-under national championship.

    MIDLAND TO HOST WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

The booster club, the city and an army of volunteers are dedicated to making the 2015 boys’ national championships a success. For in 2016 the International Softball Federation Junior Men’s Championship (ages 19-under) is coming to Midland, July 22-30.

The plan is to fuel a passion in the boys attending the ASA championships to want wear the red, white and blue USA colors and represent their country against the best young men’s teams in the world.

“The ASA boys’ national championships have provided excellent opportunities for boys interested in the USA Junior Men’s National Team and its development program,” Lach said. “The 2015 ASA Boy’s National Championships will surely be filled with strong ball players aspiring to play for Team USA in 2016 and beyond.”
