Twin City Gray Sox thrive on big innings to defeat CPI in ISC World Tournament opener

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Twin City Gray Sox scored five runs in the third, added another four in the fourth and that was all the runs Sean Kelly would need as he hurled the Sawyer, Mich. ball club to a 9-3 victory over CPI of Oswego, NY in the opening game of the 2015 ISC World Tournament, Saturday.

Kelly was roughed up for three runs in the first inning, including a home run by Sam Roes, but from then on he allowed just four hits the rest of the way, and finished with a seven-hitter along with 11 strikeouts and three walks.

CPI’s Frank Cox held the Gray Sox to just one hit and struck out the side in the second inning. But in the third the Gray Sox had Cox figured out, roughing up the right-hander for five runs on four hits.

The uprising was highlighted by a run-scoring single by Reid Benson, and a two-run double by Robby Prenkert.

Then in the fourth, the Gray Sox iced the game on Erich Biggart’s two-run single and Fabio Silvestre’s double that chased home the final two runs.

The Gray Sox collected 11 hits, led by Biggart, who was 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, Silvestre 2-for-3, 2 RBI, and Prenkert 1-for-3, 3 RBI.

CPI’s seven hits came from Tom Darling 2-for-4, Josh Buckley 2-for3, RBI, Roes 2-for-3, RBI, home run; and Greg Casbeer 1-for2.

Cox took the loss, pitching 3 1/3 innings, allowing six earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Randy Pena Herrera went the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits with two strikeouts.

The win moves the Gray Sox (1-0) into Sunday’s round where they will take on the Scarboro Force of Ontario, Canada in a 6:30 night game.
