MOLINE, IL – Melvin Batista fired a six-hitter and Isaac Nanez blasted a three-run home run to lead the Pueblo Bandits to a 3-2 victory over Ostrander (MN) Fastpitch in the opening game of the ISC World Tournament, Saturday, at Green Valley Sports Complex in Moline.

Batista (Dominican Republic) struck out 13 and walked one in going the distance. Ostrander plated solo runs in the first and sixth innings, but Batista slammed the door in the bottom of the seventh with two strikeouts and a fly ball.

Nunez’s (1-for-3, 3 RBI) home run gave Batista all the runs he would need in the fourth inning with Nick Santos aboard with a double and Tyrone Sandoval reaching safely on a single.

Brandon Meiners (2-for-3, RBI) – batting in the three spot – hammered a solo home run in the first to give Ostrander the early lead, and in the sixth, back-to-back doubles by Lewis Weldon (1-for-2) and Patrick Brackley (2-for-3, RBI) brought home the final run. But Batista shutdown the uprising by striking out Luke King and Tom Tribon to end the inning.

Michael Jamieson started for Ostrander and went 4 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Eduardo Escobedo came on in relief holding Pueblo hitless with three strikeouts over the final 2 2/3 innings.

Along with Nanez, Santos was 2-for-4, Sandoval, 1-3, and Chris Norris, 2-3, double. Ostrander’s Meiners went 2-for-3, RBI, Weldon, 1-2, Brackley, 2-3, RBI, and Brett Legler, 1-3.

  • The win moves Pueblo into Sunday where they will meet Circle Tap (WI) at 8:30 p.m.
  • The loss drops Ostrander into the loser’s bracket, Sunday at 1 p.m. between the loser of Lloyminster PM Steel Dodgers and the Bloomington (IL) Stix.
