Minnesota’s Hennager Plumbing and Heating vying for a NAFA World Series Championship

NORTH MANKATO, Minn. – The mantra for Hennager Plumbing and Heating of Lake Crystal, Minn. probably goes something like this: “One more boys, one more and the championship is ours!”

And that’s about the shape of it, as Hennager’s finds itself in the championship game of the North American Fastpitch Association (NAFA) World Series A-Major Division after defeating the Northern Merchants of New York, 7-2, in the winner’s bracket final, Saturday night.

The title game is scheduled for noon Sunday at Caswell Park Sports Complex in North Mankato. Should Hennager lose, a second game will follow at 2 p.m. under the double-elimination format.

Hennager raced out to a 5-0 lead by scoring single runs in the first and third innings, and adding three more in the fourth before the Merchants responded with a pair in the fifth. But Hennager added two insurance runs in the sixth to secure the victory and improve to 4-0 in the 20-team tournament that features teams from throughout the United States.

Hennager pounded out 10 hits with six of the runs earned. Jake Dalton blasted Merchant pitching by going 4-for-4, driving in a pair of runs and scoring three times. Chris Bambenek also drove in two runs and was 2-for-4, followed by Curt Rogers, Brandon Friedrichs, John Hohenstein and Brent Meshke with one hit each.

Justin Davis (1-0) started and went five innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits, with two walks and four strikeouts. Veteran and NAFA Hall of Fame pitcher, Lou Heller, finished the final two innings, allowing two hits to close out the Merchants.

For the Merchants, Matt Hammell, Wayne Haver, B.J. Gauger, Jody Ritter, Gavin Chambers and Tom Haver had one hit a piece. The Merchants (3-1) can force a rematch with Hennager for the title by winning out in the loser’s bracket. At 10 a.m. the Merchants will battle the winner between Elanco Fastpitch and Bowen Fastpitch being played early Sunday morning.
