ST. JOSEPH, MO – John Younger has played a lot of fastpitch in his 68 years, and he still does. In the St. Joseph League.

Amazingly, the league has been going since 1934, said Younger, and he’s been playing in it since 1955. That’s a long history for Younger and the league he loves playing in.

While fastpitch has died out in many towns and cities, the St. Joseph League continues to survive year after year.

Though down to four teams, Younger still finds stepping into the batter’s box and facing the risers and drops of pitchers much younger a challenge he still enjoys.

“I just hit and we let everyone that shows up hit,” said Younger, who was at the ISC World Tournament with this son Brian, who also played fastpitch. Most recently with the Topeka Toros.

John Younger does see a ray of hope in keeping the game alive in his part of the state. He’s pleased that on his squad, Julie Younger Fastball, brothers Craig and Jacob Lewis pitch for him.

“Craig is 17 and was an alternate on the USA Jr. Men’s National Team,” said Younger. “And his brother Jacob is 15.”

Younger credits the St. Joseph Parks Department for supporting the fastpitch and continually offering a leauge for the four teams to play.

Besides Younger’s team, Northwest Implement, Huff’s Lawn Service, and the Wizzards of Topeka round out the competion.

“We’re just trying to keep it going,” Younger said.
