MOLINE, IL – Andrew Kirkpatrick showed his intestinal fortitude, and Rafael Flores provided the knockout punch in leading the New York Gremlins to an 11-inning, 2-0, victory over the Vancouver, BC A’s, Saturday morning, in a loser’s bracket game.

The win moves the Gremlins into the loser’s brack final against Hill United Chiefs, while the A’s are eliminated from the ISC World Tournament with a fourth place finish.

But the A’s had a golden opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the 10th. But Kirkpatrick refused to let it happen.

The left-hander came on in relief of Roman Goday at the start of the 10th only to give up a leadoff triple deep down the right field line to Kevin Shellenberger (2-for-4).

But oh how Kirkpatrick toughened after that.

He proceded to kill the A’s threat with three straight strikeouts to escape the inning undamaged and give the Gremlins new life.

And they didn’t waste the opportunity. Blair Ezekiel (1-for-4) led off the inning with a single. Then after Matt Palazzo (0-for-4) flied out to the base of the fence in left-field, Zenon Winters (1-for-5) doubled putting runners at second and third.

That brought catcher Rafael Flores (2-for-4) to the plate. He got a pitch from Roman Jones much to his liking and drilled a line drive deep down the right-field line, scoring both runners. And that’s all Kirkpatrick needed.

He closed out the A’s in their final frame with two fly balls and ground out to send the Gremlins into the loser’s bracket final against the defending champion Hill United Chiefs.

(The game was to start within a half hour, but the skies opened and the rain poured for 20 minutes causing a rain delay for at least an hour.)
