LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Tim Thornton drove in two runs, Bryn Redhead gave a gutsy performance in the circle, and Hector’s NAFA Selects of Denver, CO, held off Page Brake of Salt Lake City to take an 8-5 victory in the AA / AA-Major Division of the Las Vegas Road Trip X tournament at Sunset Park, Saturday.

The Selects hadn’t been hitting the ball especially well in earlier games, but they erupted for four runs in the first inning on Thornton’s two-run double, and added two more in the second and one in the fifth to get past the hard-hitting lineup of Page Brake.

“We started slow and they took a 3-0 lead on us,” said Selects’ manager Matt Thornton, younger brother of Tim Thornton, “but our bats came alive.”

The Selects collected nine hits with Tim Thornton going 2-for-3 to lead the ball club. And with that kind of hitting and run support, Redhead was sturdy enough in the circle through seven innings to pick up the win and even his record at 1-1.

Redhead allowed five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

For the Las Vegas tournament, NAFA Vice President Mike Watson sponsored Hector’s – an upholstery business in Denver that helps finance the team through much of the season.

“Isaac Nanez’s grandfather played fastpitch for 30 years,” said Matt Thornton, “and has been a good sponsor for us. For this tournament, it’s been a joint venture between NAFA and Hector’s.”

The win moves the Selects into a late Saturday afternoon battle with Desperado Sports Tavern of Missoula, Montana, scheduled for 3 p.m. at Sunset Park.

HECTOR’S NAFA SELECTS includes second baseman, Matt Thornton; third baseman Matt Chambers; pitcher Bryn Redhead; outfielder Isaac Nanez; catcher Donnie Atkinson; second baseman Tyrone Sandoval; outfielder Mike Segura; shortstop Daniel Vigil; outfielder Corey Willis; designated runner Gene Estrada, Tim Thornton, Taevon McCabe, Benji Hedgecock and Mike Watson.
