Men’s fastpitch undergoing a revival in Austin, Texas

AUSTIN, Tex – Men’s fastpitch is making a comeback in Austin through the efforts of Toni Castillo, Rudy Almarez and Ray Saldana, who joined forces to start a fall league in 2016.

The Austin Men’s Fastpitch League started with four teams: the Jokers, Indians, Yellow Jackets and Rams.

To keep the cost down, team managers called balls and strikes, and because of the short fences (200 feet) home runs were ruled as doubles.

The league even introduced wood bats toward the end of the season (wood bats are used in the NAFA Wood Bat World Series).

After the successful fall rollout, a spring league was planned with a nearly doubling of teams to seven with games slated to be played in East Austin. With such a sudden spurt in growth, the league is searching for a second field.

An encouraging sign is the upsurge of younger players on the league team rosters. But certainly more teams and players are welcomed to sustain this amazing growth.
