United States climbs to third at Men’s Softball World Championship

WHITEHORSE, YK, Canada – The USA Men’s Fastpitch Softball National Team improved its record to 4-2 and moved into third place in Pool A of the Men’s Softball World Championship after defeating Hong Kong 16-0, Wednesday.

With the win and just one game remaining in pool play against Republic of South Africa (2-4) on Thursday, Team USA is in a good position to secure a spot in the eight-team medal-round playoffs that begin Friday.

Team USA made short work of Hong Kong by putting 11 runs on the board in the first inning. Two more runs in the second and three in the fourth halted the game under the mercy rule.

Duane Weiler hurled a one-hitter with six strikeouts to improve to 2-0 in the tournament.

The offense pounded Honk Kong pitching for 13 hits, including six home runs by Kevin Castillo, Jeff Nowaczyk, Erick Ochoa, Matt Palazzo, Marcus Tan and Chase Turner.
