FARGO, ND – The Topeka Toros (1-0) got off to a great start in the NAFA Open-Holm Classic by beating a very good Randy’s A’s (1-1) from British Columbia, 4-1, at Lindenwood Park in Fargo, Saturday.

The Toros and A’s matched hits with six apiece, but when it came to “clutch,” Topeka couldn’t have asked much more from the top of its lineup.

    The main protagonists?

Leadoff hitter, Jaime Garcia, Jr. had an RBI; No. 2, Matt Thorton went 2-for-3 and scored a run; No. 3, Peter Rodriguez, drove in a run and scored once with his 1-3; and cleanup hitter, Chris Leaf was just as good in matching Rodriquez’s stats. And finally the Toros’ No. 5 guy, Matt Chambers had an RBI and a hit in three trips.

If you’re counting, that’s four RBIs from the top five guys in the batting order.

The Toros scored all four runs in the third inning, with Dwayne Corcoran starting things off with a single and later scoring on an infield out. Thorton followed with a double and Rodriguez brought him home with a single. Leaf kept the hits coming with a single, and Chambers booming RBI triple sent him scurrying across the plate with the Toros final run.

Meanwhile, Josh Pettett was toeing the rubber. And he performed masterfully by allowing one earned run – a first inning RBI single by Cory Giroux – along with two walks and 12 strikeouts.

After the first inning, Pettett toughened, by scattering five hits over the rest of the frames to pick up his first win in the NAFA Open.

The Toros continued play in Pool A with a big game against the St. Paul, Minnesota Angels (1-0) and then completing pool play with a night game against Rooters Bar of Fargo.
