Top-ranked New York Gremlins take Boys of Summer title

DENMARK, Wisc. – The New York Gremlins from Clifton Park, NY erupted for 19 runs on 16 hits to crush the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada Diamondbacks 19-0 in claiming the 14th Annual Boys of Summer championship, Sunday, in Denmark, WI.

All nine in the Gremlins lineup had at least one hit, with lead off batter Mathieu Roy going 3 for 5, 3 runs and 4 RBIs, Blair Ezekiel 3 for 4, 3 runs, 2 RBIs, Bryan Abery 3 for 4, 3 runs, RBI, Rhys Casley 2 for 3, 2 runs and 2 RBIs, and Wayne Laulu 2 for 2, run and 3 RBIs.

New York – the No. 1 ranked team in the world by the International Softball Congress – broke the game open with eight runs in the first inning and another eight in the second.

Roy, who plays centerfield, opened the game with a solo home run, and later hit an inside the park homer. And Ezekiel added a two-run shot to essentially put the game out of reach.

The Gremlins’ Sean Cleary picked up the win in the five-inning mercy game by allowing just one hit to catcher Jim Climenhaga, while striking out nine and walking two.

The Gremlins (5-0) reached the title game by knocking off the Kegel Black Knights of Fargo 5-1, while the Diamondbacks (4-1) beat host Circle Tap Dukes 5-2.
