Eight nations including the United States remain in medal contention at WBSC Men’s Softball World Championship playoffs

WHITEHORSE, Yukon, Canada – The preliminary stage at the 2017 WBSC Men’s Softball World Championship has concluded, leaving eight teams remaining in the hunt for the Gold Medal.

Following the seven-day round robin pool stage in the men’s international softball flagship event, eight nations (the top four nations from each pool) have advanced into a Double-Page Playoff beginning Friday, 14 July, to determine the 2017 Men’s Softball World Champion.

The national teams to survive into the Playoffs include:

No. 1 New Zealand
No. 2 Japan
No. 3 Argentina
No. 4 Canada
No. 5 Australia
No. 6 United States
No. 7 Venezuela
No. 19 Botswana

  • The United States (5-2 in Pool A) opens with Venezuela (6-1 in Pool B) at 2 p.m.at the Pepsi Softball Centre in Whitehorse.
  • The bottom four teams in each pool have been eliminated from medal contention but will continue in the Placement Round to determine final standing.

    The 16 participating national teams in the WBSC Men’s Softball World Championship represent a global reach that spans across all regions – Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, and Oceania – and will play 76 games in total before a World Champion is crowned.

    The gold medal game will take centre stage on 16 July at 16:00, and will be preceded by the bronze medal match at 13:00.

    Black Sox beaten by Venezuela at world softball championships after big win over Japan

    WHITEHORSE, YK, Canada – The New Zealand Black Sox have crashed to a sloppy 7-3 defeat to Venezuela in their first loss at the men’s softball world championship in Canada.

    Mark Sorenson’s men – ranked No 1 in the world – went from the sublime – a 8-1 Wednesday morning (NZ Time) victory over second-ranked Japan – to the ridiculous a few hours later against the vibrant Venezuelans at Whitehorse.

    Their defeat now leaves New Zealand, seventh-ranked Venezuela and Japan all tied with one four wins and one defeat each – Venezuela’s a 7-0 forfeit to Japan after arriving late on opening day. Continue Reading.

    Team Canada undefeated in world softball championships

    WHITEHORSE, YK, CanadaTeam Canada (5-0) was on a winning streak this weekend at the Men?s Worlds Softball Championship.

    The returning champs and hosts started off this year?s championship strong, remaining undefeated after the first three days of competition in Whitehorse.

    Facing off against South Africa Friday night they won 10-2 and went on to win 8:3 against Argentina the following evening.

    Sunday night?s game was a nail biter against Team U.S.A. with Canada starting off slow and ending with a resounding finish.

    Canada continued its winning streak culminating with a 9-4 win over Australia to improve to 5-0 in Pool A on Tuesday. Continue reading in The Daily Star

    Sixteen teams will compete in the 2017 WBSC Men’s Softball World Championship at the Pepsi Softball Centre in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, July 7-16. Courtesy Photo

    WHITEHORSE, Canada – Fans around the world will be able to watch the 2017 WBSC Men’s Softball World Championship from their living room, thanks to SportsCanada.TV and Ballpark Broadcasting.

    Sixteen teams from all five Olympic continents will compete in the 15th edition of the men’s softball championship, which will be hosted in Whitehorse, Yukon, July 7 to 16. Live streaming video will be offered for all 76 games played over the 10 days.

    SportsCanada.TV will provide the video production for each game while Ballpark Broadcasting will provide the play-by-play and colour commentary. The cost to view all games, including playoffs, is US $29.95.

    Men’s National Team set to begin WBSC World Championship play tomorrow

    OKLAHOMA CITY – The chance to stand atop the podium begins tomorrow for the USA Softball Men’s National Team (MNT) as the team is set to open play at the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Men’s World Championship (MWC), against Argentina at 7:30 p.m. PT. With the 17-member roster recently announced, the WBSC MWC is set to take place July 7-16 in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada.

    “I think we are ready,” said Head Coach Denny Bruckert. “With 20 games played we feel like we are more prepared then we’ve been in the past. Everyone is playing well and everyone is where they should be. There’s been a lot of competition within the team, which has pushed everyone to be at their best right now. Our goal is to be on the medal stand.”

    Defending world champion Canada knocks off the United States to claim Vancouver Challenge

    VANCOUVER, BC, Canada – Is Canada peaking at the right time for the Men’s Softball World Championship?

    All indications that the Canadians are poised to make a strong run at defending their 2015 title was evident after an impressive performance in the Vancouver Challenge that featured several of the world’s best teams.

    Canada ran roughshod in the tournament by outscoring its opponents 54-6, while posting a 7-0 record, including a 4-0 victory over the United States in the championship.

    That perfect mark also includes a 10-3 hammering of the world’s No. 1 ranked New Zealand Black Sox in the semi-finals.
