SALT LAKE CITY – Mention the name “Page Brake” in men’s fast pitch circles and most will say, sure I’ve heard of them, or I’ve seen them play, or what a great team.

But for those REALLY in the know, they will go a bit further in dishing out the accolades. For this Salt Lake City ball club has quite a legacy.

The Gremlins, ranked No. 1 by the International Softball Congress, swept through the fourth annual Ed McCormick Men’s Fastpitch Tournament unblemished (4-0) and finished off the July 27-28 weekend by defeating No. 4 ranked Pennsylvania Power of Harrisburg, PA 11-4 in the final.

Top fastpitch teams coming to Erie

    FROM STAFF REPORTS, Erie Times-News

ERIE, Penn – Four of the world’s elite fastpitch softball teams will collide July 27-28 in the fourth annual Ed McCormick Fastpitch Tournament, to be played at 11th and Hess.

And while four teams might not seem like a lot, it’s actually twice as many teams as currently exist in Erie’s once-thriving men’s City Rec fastpitch softball league.

That’s a far cry from the 1980s and ’90s, according to Bill Hillhouse, a world-class pitcher who has competed internationally since 1990 and who plays for the New York Gremlins, the world’s No. 1-ranked team and one of the clubs locked and loaded for the McCormick Tournament.

Fastpitch softball, Hillhouse said, used to be the game in town.

So many men wanted to play that the city had a morning league for those who worked third shift.

Now, he said, it’s a struggle to find 18 players to fill out two teams for the City Rec’s informal Tuesday evening fastpitch league.

“People used to go down to the ballpark to watch games on Tuesdays and Thursdays — that was their form of entertainment,” Hillhouse said. “But now they can stay home and watch the Indians on TV every night.

“And it’s just not softball that’s suffering. Drive by any city park and you don’t see kids outside playing. Every sport is suffering. But we don’t have the numbers to make up the difference like the other sports have.” Continue reading

Ed McCormick Tournament showcases world’s top-ranked teams and pitchers

ERIE, PA – The annual Ed McCormich Tournament will be held July 27-28 at 1137 E. 11th St. with the International Softball Congress’s four top-ranked teams squaring off in what could be a prelude to the 2013 ISC World Tournament “final four” when the championship takes place Aug. 10-17 in the Quad Cities of Iowa and Illinois.

This should be a dandy matchup of the world’s top hitters and pitchers. In the circle for the Clifton Park, New York Gremlins will be Andrew Kirkpatrick, Sean Whitten and Bill Hillhouse.

The Jarvis Ontario Hallman Twins will counter with Paul Koert, Jeff Farion and Nik Hayes. The Pennsylvania Power will trot out Juan Potolicchio, Eric Fogel, and Karl Gollan, while the Six Nations Hill United Chiefs will counter with a small army of arms, including Adam Folkard, Mitch Hardy, Jason Hill, Mike Joseph, and Grant Patterson.

For fans of the pitching-dominant side of the sport, this “who’s who” of great pitchers should send them scrambling for birds’ eye view seating behind home plate.

Someone to know: Fastpitch softball pitcher Michael Cantrell

    Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

In just nine years, Michael Cantrell has become one of the young promising pitchers in the USA.

“I’m a very antsy person, so when the fastpitch season is coming up all I want to do is play softball,” – Michael Cantrell

MECHANICSBURG, OH – Young pitchers who follow the heady advice of veteran pitchers generally have a good start in becoming first-rate fastpitch pitchers.

Michael Cantrell is one of them. Though he’s only 20 years old, he’s learned much in his nine years in the circle, where he windmilled his first pitch as a 12-year-old.

He credits veteran pitchers Rich Markham, Ron Marstiller, Scott Sutherland and Bill Hillhouse with giving him sound advice in learning the trade.

“Over the span of my career I have taken their information and used it,” Cantrell said. “All of them are successful pitchers, and combined they have a lot of knowledge.”
