The Fontana A.B. Miller and Redlands East Valley “Hit”

YUCAIPA, CA – I didn’t see it, but I heard it. That hard-hitting whack when body crashes into body, shoulder pad slams into shoulder pad, and helmet cracks helmet.

Friday night I covered a high school football game. It’s what I’ve been doing for the past 16 years.

And this game between the Fontana A.B. Miller Rebels and Redlands East Valley Wildcats had a lot at stake: The championship of the Citrus Belt League.

So kids were flying at each other. The intensity was at fever pitch. The hitting reached a ferocious level.

Quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers were hunted down by 220-pound linebackers and defensive backs with Gazelle-like speed. And when they caught them, they hurled them to the ground like Siberian Tigers stalking and ripping into wild boar.

REDLANDS, CA – There would be no celebrating, and there would be no repeat Citrus Belt League championship for the Fontana A.B. Miller Rebels football team.

The undefeated (9-0, 6-0 CBL) Redlands East Valley Wildcats saw to that. But the Wildcats breathed a huge sigh of relief when the game ended and they escaped with a 28-20 victory last Friday at the University of Redlands.

For the Rebels, the loss was especially agonizing and follows a 28-27 loss to he Redlands Terriers last Friday.

“Two weeks in a row we should have won games we didn’t,” said Rebels’ Head Coach, Jeff Strycula. “We are disappointed and we’re not very happy.”

YUCAIPA, CA – Fontana linebacker Richard Thorpe and quarterback Manuel Salgado were frustrated and disappointed after Friday’s game with the Yucaipa Thunderbirds.

It was a game in which the Steelers matched the Thunderbirds hit for hit, and play for play in the first half – trailing just 7-0 when the two teams left the field at half-time.

It was a game in which fourth place in the Citrus Belt League was on the line.

It was a game in which the outcome would go far in determining which team would advance into the post-season CIF playoffs.

But it was also a game in which the Thunderbirds outplayed and outscored the Steelers in the second half to post a 27-6 victory.

“We played hard but not good enough in the second half,” said Thorpe, who led the Steelers with 10 tackles. “We had trouble with their passing game and we missed too many tackles. That has killed us all season.”
