Clyde Bennett celebrates 60 years in men’s fastpitch softball

    Tuesday, March 18th, 2014

(What a wonderful tribute by Rudy Soriano to Clyde Bennett, one of the most dedicated men in the history of boys’ and men’s fastpitch softball.)

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – If you were to go to the Santa Barbara’s Elings Park softball fields on any given evening, you will find a man who has been playing longer than the existence of the park itself.

This man wears many hats here: league/tournament coordinator, umpire, coach, but the most impressive hat this man dons is player.

This year marks the 60th anniversary as a player for Clyde Bennett and this Wednesday night he will put on his catcher’s mask to celebrate this tremendous milestone.

Clyde started playing fastpitch at the age of 16 in 1954 with his church team in the fastpitch leagues of Paramount, CA. Since then it has seemed almost impossible to get him away from the game. His love for the game didn’t just stop at playing but he contributed back by becoming an umpire in ’61 and continues to do so to this day, whether it be for the fields of Elings or local area high school games.

  • Clyde Bennett and his Young Bucks return to NAFA for a run at the 23-Under title

    Thursday, June 27th, 2013

SANTA BARBARA, CA – For the past several years, Clyde Bennett has thought, this is it. This will be the last year he’s taking his Young Bucks to the NAFA 23-Under World Series. But like a grandfather who can’t say no to the pleadings of his grandchildren, Bennett is talked into going.

“I have kids who played for me in the 23-Under, and they tell other young kids how much fun they had,” said Bennett. “And the younger ones say, ‘you did it for those guys, why not us?’ The kids just won’t let me give it up.”

Best of the West and Santa Barbara, perfect partners for men’s fastpitch

    Thursday, February 21st, 2013

    BestOfWest.web

“The Best of the West bucks the trend of encouraging teams and (players) to play down and encourages them to play up and take on the best.” – Dave Blackburn, Best of the West tournament director for 13 years.

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF – Many open level men’s fastpitch tournaments have vanished in Southern California. But there’s one that continues to survive, and many would say thrive: The Best of the West.

Come the first weekend in June, the Best of the West will celebrate its 23rd consecutive year in offering a tournament for “all comers,” as former 13-year tournament director (1998-2010), Dave Blackburn would say. Ten teams entered last year, and Blackburn and current tournament director, Clyde Bennett, are expecting another strong field.

    But first a little background.
