Men’s National Team set to begin WBSC World Championship play tomorrow

OKLAHOMA CITY – The chance to stand atop the podium begins tomorrow for the USA Softball Men’s National Team (MNT) as the team is set to open play at the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Men’s World Championship (MWC), against Argentina at 7:30 p.m. PT. With the 17-member roster recently announced, the WBSC MWC is set to take place July 7-16 in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada.

“I think we are ready,” said Head Coach Denny Bruckert. “With 20 games played we feel like we are more prepared then we’ve been in the past. Everyone is playing well and everyone is where they should be. There’s been a lot of competition within the team, which has pushed everyone to be at their best right now. Our goal is to be on the medal stand.”

ASA/USA Men’s Softball Tournament Gives Players A Fair Shake

“It was awesome, I was blown away by the youth of the pitchers. I believe we had 20 of the 28 pitchers below 30 years of age, and several under 25 including two 19 year olds, and 22 and 23 year olds. I’m really impressed…” – Denny Bruckert, USA Softball Men’s National Team Head Coach

OKLAHOMA CITY – Selecting players for the USA Softball Men’s National Team from the hundreds playing fastpitch from coast-to-coast, isn’t the easiest of tasks.

And a vital part of that task is making sure that talented athletes get a fair shot at being seen and evaluated.

National Team Head Coach Denny Bruckert and his coaching staff pondered this question: How, when and where could the organization gather together as many players as possible for an evaluation?

“The coaching staff, Gregg Leather, Greg Hicks, Nick McCurry and myself thought about how we could indentify and evaluate players,” said Bruckert, who was appointed USA national team head coach in 2013. “Warren Jones (ASA/USA Softball President) brought it up this year to get it going. This is the best idea I’ve been involved with.”

LONG BEACH, Calif. – All Yusef Davis Jr. wanted was a chance. He got it and he made the most of it.

Davis heard about the USA Softball Men’s Invitational Fastpitch Tournament being held June 11-12. It was an opportunity for U.S. players to be evaluated by the USA men’s coaching staff and the USA national team selection committee.

It was an opportunity Davis couldn’t pass up. If he played well and impressed the evaluators, it just might earn him an invite to a USA national team tryout camp.

FOOTING THE BILL

That was all it took for the 21 year old Davis to pay his own airfare to Ashland, Ohio where the tournament was being held.

The experience?

“It was incredible,” said Davis, who grew up playing soccer, football, basketball and baseball in youth and high school. “I was nervous. I knew a lot of talent would be there. I wanted to play against that talent and be seen.”

Pat Sagdal belted a two-run home run to give the United States a 2-1 victory over Mexico in the 2015 Pan American Games, Thursday, July 16. The win moves Team USA into the playoffs with a chance to win the Gold Medal.

TORONTO – The United States could muster just two hits off Mexico’s Jose Naranjo, but one of them was as big as it gets.

In the fifth inning, Pat Sagdal broke up a scoreless pitching duel between USA’s Gerald Muizelaar and Naranjo by drilling a home run over the right-field fence with Nick Mullins aboard with a leadoff walk to give the United States a 2-1 victory over Mexico on Thursday.

The win ends a three-game skid and improves Team USA’s record to 2-3 in the Pan American Games at President’s Choice Ajax Ballpark in Toronto. It was also the final round-robin game for both teams and it was huge.

      TEAM USA PLAYOFF BOUND

Though both teams have 2-3 records, the win places the USA fourth in the six-team tournament that secures the final playoff spot, edging out Mexico because of head-to-head competition.

“Anytime you hit a home run it’s a big moment,” said Sagdal, who batted ninth and played centerfield. “That hit couldn’t have happened at a better time.”
