BALDWIN, Wisc. The 2014 state “A/”A-Major” championship of the Wisconsin chapter of the North American Men’s Fastpitch Association (NAFA) will be held at Mill Pond Park in Baldwin July 25-27.

Baldwin hosted the 2007 “A/”A-Major” and “AA/”AA-Major” state tourneys and drew a total of 23 teams. Hosting the “A/”A-Major” only in 2010 Baldwin attracted 14 squads.

Bol’s Lanes of the host city will be back to defend the “A/”A-Major” crown they captured with an undefeated run at Middleton last season. Nearby teams expected to join them at this year’s event include Dugout Bar and Grill of Cushing, Bon Ton Bar of Luck, the Athletics of La Crosse, the Orangemen of Rice Lake, and Sawdust City of Eau Claire.

With the tournament open to teams from neighboring states as well as Wisconsin it is anticipated that some of Minnesota’s finest ball clubs will also take part. Grumpy’s Bar of Forest City, Iowa, a 2010 participant, has also indicated an interest in returning to Baldwin.

This year’s NAFA World Series will be played in the Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa from early to mid- August.

CUSHING, WI – For over 20 years, the small Wisconsin town of Cushing has hosted a men’s fastpitch softball tournament on Memorial Day weekend. And for the past nine years, the Dugout Men’s Fastpitch team has hosted the event.

And this year, Les Dietmeier of the Dugout team wants to make the event even bigger and better.

“Last year’s tourney was attended by 10 teams,” he said. “We had one team from Duluth (Minn.) and one from Rice Lake (Wisc.). We are trying to get this tourney back to where it was in the good old days when every team wanted in, and it ran for four days.”

WEST DES MOINES, DES MOINES, IA – The Dugout Bar & Grill men’s fastpitch team let out a whoop and a holler mid-Saturday morning after the final out in their, 8-7, win over Roca Tavern (NB) in the NAFA “A” World Series tournament.

It was the second win of the morning for the team from Cushing, Wisconsin. And right fielder, Les Dietmeier, felt really good that his team would keep advancing through the losers bracket with the hope of reaching Sunday’s championship round.

“We’ve got six games possible today to get into Sunday,” he said. “We are 3-2 (record) after losing (8-2 to Grumpy’s of Iowa) in the winner’s bracket.”

Max Loew picked up his second win of the day, entering in relief in the fourth inning, Dietmeier said. “We were down 4-1 and they scored a couple off Max, but he settled down in the sixth and seventh innings and threw really well.”

Loew pitched a complete game in Dugout’s, 9-6, victory over Young’s Primetime. Now the Cushing team moves on to meet a good Memories ball club from New York.

The Dugout offense has been hitting the ball well, Dietmeier said – especially leadoff batter, Pete Kelly, and number two in the line up, Ben Lungdreu.

“Pete had a three-run homer (against Roca Tavern)” he said. “That was key in giving us the lead. Ben has been bunting, getting base hits and with his speed, is a threat on the bases. This is our first NAFA.

“It’s been a good tournament. The teams are evenly matched. Some teams hit better than others, but anybody can beat anybody, and the pitching is pretty even.”

In other NAFA “A” action that unfolds at 4:45, Grumpy’s from Iowa takes on the Exit Diamond Realty of Pennsylvania in the upper winners bracket final. And in the lower bracket, the Winnipeg Bullets (Canada) meet Fort Collins (CO).

Then the winners of the upper and lower brackets play at 8:15 in the overall winners bracket final at Raccoon River Park Comlpex on field one.

In the NAFA AA winner’s bracket final at 1:15 at Raccoon, Keating’s Fitness of Wilkes-Barre, PA takes on the Sioux Falls Sox.

Both teams have 3-0 records. Keating’s has been blasting the ball with a 7-6 victory over Pickseed Bronx (Canada), downed Omaha Fastpitch, 8-0, and Cerro Gordo (MN), 9-0.

The Sox got off to a good start in its opener with a 9-0 breeze over Blues Fastpitch (IL); 3-0 over the Orangemen, and 11-2 blasting of Willkomm Mobil (WI).
