Crafty Cota pitches Yucaipa over Fontana A.B. Miller

YUCAIPA, CA – He doesn’t blow the ball by batters. He doesn’t over power batters with great breaking pitches. He doesn’t leave batters feeling in awe. But what Pedro Cota does very well is this: He wins.

And the Fontana A.B. Miller Rebels will a test to that after dropping a 7-2 decision to the senior right-hander and the Yucaipa Thunderbirds, Wednesday, in Citrus Belt League play.

“He’s a good, crafty pitcher,” said Rebels Head Coach, Frank Martinez. “He kept us off balance and threw strikes. We talked about his off speed pitches and change ups, and staying back and the hitting the ball the other way and not trying to pull the ball. (But) that Cota kid is a real good pitcher.”

Clutch shots send Fontana A.B. Miller into post season playoffs, Yucaipa’s season comes to an end

FONTANA, CA – They slugged it out like two heavy weights in a title bout. They played a tug of war in which both sides refused to budge. They battled through four quarters and 32 minutes, and that still wasn’t enough time to decide a victor.

And finally after two exhausting overtimes, the Fontana A.B. Miller Rebels defeated the visiting Yucaipa Thunderbirds, 93-85, in a must-win situation.

The victory earns Miller a tie for third place in the Citrus Belt League, and sends the Rebels into the postseason CIF Southern Section Division 1A Playoffs as the league’s number three seed.

The match up between the Thunderbirds and Rebels was in reality a playoff game. And it had that kind of intensity from tip-off to the final buzzer. For the winner would advance into the post season, while the loser would see its season come to an end.

But for the Rebels to keep their season alive, it took two clutch game-saving shots.

BATTS’ BIG TREY
Darrius Batts had a huge night netting 34 points to lead all scorers. But his 3-pointer with 12-seconds left in regulation was his biggest shot of the season. It tied the game, 65-65, sending it into overtime.

And then Ruben Castanon had his turn at game-saving heroics. With three-seconds left in the first overtime and Yucaipa leading, 80-77, the slick ball handling point guard drove from Yucaipa’s baseline on the in bounds, weaving his way down court at full speed. And from 28-feet out Castanon launched a high-arcing shot that found nothing but net as the buzzer sounded.

And as the ball left his hand, Castanon asked for a little guidance.

“I just prayed it would go in and we would go into (second) overtime,” Castanon said, who finished with seven points. “I had to step up because I’m a senior and I didn’t want to let my teammates down. After that shot went in I thought we are going to the playoffs.”

The Fontana A.B. Miller and Redlands East Valley “Hit”

YUCAIPA, CA – I didn’t see it, but I heard it. That hard-hitting whack when body crashes into body, shoulder pad slams into shoulder pad, and helmet cracks helmet.

Friday night I covered a high school football game. It’s what I’ve been doing for the past 16 years.

And this game between the Fontana A.B. Miller Rebels and Redlands East Valley Wildcats had a lot at stake: The championship of the Citrus Belt League.

So kids were flying at each other. The intensity was at fever pitch. The hitting reached a ferocious level.

Quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers were hunted down by 220-pound linebackers and defensive backs with Gazelle-like speed. And when they caught them, they hurled them to the ground like Siberian Tigers stalking and ripping into wild boar.

REDLANDS, CA – There would be no celebrating, and there would be no repeat Citrus Belt League championship for the Fontana A.B. Miller Rebels football team.

The undefeated (9-0, 6-0 CBL) Redlands East Valley Wildcats saw to that. But the Wildcats breathed a huge sigh of relief when the game ended and they escaped with a 28-20 victory last Friday at the University of Redlands.

For the Rebels, the loss was especially agonizing and follows a 28-27 loss to he Redlands Terriers last Friday.

“Two weeks in a row we should have won games we didn’t,” said Rebels’ Head Coach, Jeff Strycula. “We are disappointed and we’re not very happy.”
