REDLANDS, CA – The Redlands East Valley Wildcats scored three goals in the first 15 minutes and were never headed in a 5-0 defeat of the Fontana Steelers, Friday, in a Citrus Belt League girl’s soccer match up.

“We knew it would be tough, they’re a great talent and probably the best team in league this year,” said Fontana coach, Armando Fresquez.

After the Steelers gave up the three early goals, the defense toughened the rest of the way. Fresquez especially lauded his goalkeeper, Edith Brito. Click to continue »

YUCAIPA, CA – The Thunderbirds pushed and challenged and threatened, but when the official blew the final whistle, the Fontana Steelers escaped with a 1-0 Citrus Belt League victory on Wednesday – leaving the Thunderbirds frustrated with yet another narrow loss.

The Thunderbirds have played well, but have lost three consecutive games by one goal in the past eight days: 3-2 to Fontana A.B. Miller; 1-0 to Redlands, and now 1-0 to Fontana, the league’s two-time defending champion.

But the loss to Fontana was especially frustrating. The half ended scoreless – still anyone’s game. The Steelers finally broke through and scored in the 47th minute of the second half on Johnathan Madrid’s breakaway goal.

But from then on, the Thunderbirds seized the momentum and had five excellent scoring opportunities late in the game, but came away exasperatingly empty.

“In the second half we started making things happen,” said Yucaipa coach, Claudio Rivas. “But (like) in the last couple of games it’s been a one-goal difference. The opposition seems to find the net, but we don’t and that has been the difference.”

YUCAIPA, CA – The Yucaipa High boy’s soccer team has played its Citrus Belt League foes close in the Thunderbirds first two league matches. But unfortunately they came up a goal short in each game, losing 3-2 to Fontana A.B. Miller, and 1-0 to Redlands.

And it doesn’t get any easier this afternoon as Yucaipa takes on the Fontana Steelers in a 3:15 match at Yucaipa High School.

The two-time defending CBL champions come to town with a 2-0-2 league record, 7-3-4 overall, tied with Redlands in second place. Fontana A.B. Miller sits on top of the league at 2-0-1. Click to continue »

YUCAIPA, CA – The Fontana Steelers boy’s water polo team knows each of its Citrus Belt League rivals’ pools quite well. They’ve been forced to. Because this season the Steelers have gone without the cozy comfort of their own Fontana High School pool.

Yet, the Steelers have done quite respectable as a road team in carving out an 11-11 overall record, while going 2-6 in the CBL.

“We’ve needed more time in the pool, but ours has been down since May because of leaking water,” said Steelers Head Coach, Kristen Flores in her second year coaching the boy’s team. “But we’ve done quite well despite the lack of pool time we needed.” Click to continue »

YUCAIPA, CA – Fontana linebacker Richard Thorpe and quarterback Manuel Salgado were frustrated and disappointed after Friday’s game with the Yucaipa Thunderbirds.

It was a game in which the Steelers matched the Thunderbirds hit for hit, and play for play in the first half – trailing just 7-0 when the two teams left the field at half-time.

It was a game in which fourth place in the Citrus Belt League was on the line.

It was a game in which the outcome would go far in determining which team would advance into the post-season CIF playoffs.

But it was also a game in which the Thunderbirds outplayed and outscored the Steelers in the second half to post a 27-6 victory.

“We played hard but not good enough in the second half,” said Thorpe, who led the Steelers with 10 tackles. “We had trouble with their passing game and we missed too many tackles. That has killed us all season.”
