Jarvis Travelers rough up Gilles Wellness in World Tournament opener

Sunday, August 12th, 2012

MIDLAND, MI – Until someone takes away their title, the Jarvis Travelers are still the ISC World Tournament champions.

The 2011 defending champions started out strong in defense of their title by roughing up Gilles Wellness of Midland 9-0 on Sunday afternoon on the strength of a five-run sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by Frederik Terkelson.

Meanwhile, Jarvis right-hander Sean Cleary (1-0) held Gilles to two hits through six innings before giving way to Todd Martin, who finished by retiring the side in order to end the game under the mercy rule in six innings.

Jarvis’ Tyron Bartotillo of New Zealand swung a big bat as well, driving in two runs with a triple in the third.

Greg Guy started for Gilles and went two innings, allowing two runs – both on bases loaded walks, before giving way to Paul Hoisington, who pitched effectively through three innings, holding Jarvis at bay with a dancing knuckleball.

But the two-time defending champs (2010 and 2011) from Jarvis, Ontario Canada got to Hoisington in the sixth with a five-run outburst on six hits to advance into the winners bracket in the 46-team world tournament.

Jarvis will face Vancouver Columbia CR A1 Brewers, Monday at 6 p.m. The Brewers defeated Pete’s Blues (IL) 1-0 to advance.
