Fond memories of the Hollywood Store

    Sunday, December 20th, 2015

WATERTOWN, Minn. – The name may have changed to Hollywood Sports Complex, but for many old timers it will forever be known as the Hollywood “Store.” Back in the 1960s and ‘70s, some of the fiercest men’s fastpitch battles in Minnesota were fought on the two ball diamonds at the Store, located near Watertown and about 40 miles west of Minneapolis.

In 1974 the Store underwent a name change to the Hollywood Sports Complex. And in 2008 this historic fastpitch site reached a rare milestone, celebrating its 50th anniversary of hosting men’s fastpitch softball leagues and tournaments.

The fastpitch tradition began in 1959 when Melvin and Esther Littel, who owned the Hollywood Store, started a team and joined a traveling league. And for many years, the Store hosted three league games every Sunday.

“The Store was a beacon for fastpitch on Sunday afternoons,” said Bruce Johnson, 58, who grew up in the area and began playing on the Store ball diamond as a 16-year-old. Johnson retired in the mid 1990s at age 44, but fond memories of the little ball diamond play on.

Richard Quigley’s back in the fastpitch game

    Monday, June 30th, 2014

SCANDIA, Minn – Richard Quigley had a belly full of fastpitch. It was time to get out. Time to relax at his cabin on summer weekends after 20 years of crisscrossing Minnesota and Wisconsin from one softball field to the next. So he swore off fastpitch in 1994, vowing never to return.

    Or so he thought.

But one man wasn’t letting him get away so easily, and was determined to “un-retire” the 54-year-old Quigley.

“Greg ‘Chopper’ Lammers called me non-stop,” said Quigley with a chuckle.

And finally in 2012, Chopper’s persistence wore down Quigley’s resistance. He convinced Quigley to “fill in” at a league game because he was short of players.

chaparro.erick Erick Chaparro, 21, had a 3-1 record and pitched a no-hitter in helping the Rice Lake Orangemen win the 10th Annual Hollywood Days Men’s Fastpitch Tournament.

WATERTOWN, Minn. – Rice Lake’s bats, arms and gloves were in solid form and as a result the Orangemen won the 10th Annual Hollywood Days Men’s Fastpitch Tournament, June 21-22, at the Hollywood Sports Complex in Watertown.

The Orangemen defeated the Fargo Bombers 5-2 behind the three-hit pitching of 21-year-old Erick Chaparro, who walked four and struck out five to lead Rice Lake to its second tournament championship in consecutive weekends.

The Orangemen also won the Rice Lake Aquafest Invitational, June 13-15, the first such title for the ball club in the 36 years of the event.

Fargo stuck Chaparro with his lone loss (5-4) on Saturday in round-robin play, but the right-hander from Maracaibo, Venezuela bounced back in fine form in the second meeting.

“He threw much better the second game,” said Orangemen manager Travis Thompson, in his first year leading the ball club. “Erick has a lot of heart, drive and fire.”

Castle Rock’s Sunday surge stars in Hollywood

CASTLE ROCK, Minn. – On Saturday the results weren’t favorable, but come Sunday Castle Rock did a complete turnaround to win the Class C Division of the 10th Annual Hollywood Days Tournament.

Held at the Hollywood Sports Complex near Watertown, the tournament had 10 teams entered. After finishing 1-2 on Saturday and scoring just seven runs, Castle Rock qualified for Sunday’s C Division playoffs.

And that’s when the bats started heating up. Castle Rock outscored three opponents by a 32-14 margin starting with a 7-0 victory over Hollywood; followed by knocking off a tough Minnesota Computers / Scandia Fastpitch team, 11-5.

That set up a championship matchup with St. Paul Pawns, who beat Dawson 8-1 to advance. Castle Rock didn’t let their hot bats cool off, and erupted for a 14-9 win that improves the team’s record to 10-6.

The key to the ball club’s success, said manager and catcher Ken Schonning, is getting all his ball players together. When he’s got a full squad, they can cause some damage.

“We had all our players at the tournament,” said Schonning, who has managed the team for 36 of its 49 years. “We needed our sticks because we knew the Pawns are a good hitting team.”
