Juan hit, One run, Power won

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Maybe Juan Tomez Nunez has had bigger hits in the ISC World Tournament. But the hit he had Monday has to rank high on his list of most crucial, most dramatic, most memorable.

Certainly his Pennsylvania PA Power teammates and the Kegel Black Knights won’t forget it.

Nunez – batting in the lead off spot – belted a first inning home run that Power rode for seven tense innings to a 1-0 victory over the Black Knights of Fargo, ND in a winners bracket game Monday.

The win was crucial in keeping Power undefeated at 2-0 – and out of the long and treacherous mine field called the losers bracket – that Kegel now finds itself at 1-1.

After Nunez’ homer, Power pitcher Huemul Mata and Kegel’s Jorge Segura locked up in a tight pitchers’ duel – one of the best so far in the world tournament.

Mata got the win on a three-hitter with three walks and nine strikeouts.

Segura’s only mistake, only hit allowed came off the pitch he served up to Nunez. Other than that, he was tough the rest of the way, walking eight and striking out nine.

Kegel, however, did have its chances, stranding seven runners. And they had a golden opportunity to steal away Nunez’ heroics in the fourth inning. The Black Knights loaded the bases with one out, but Mata escaped the threat with a strikeout and infield pop up.

For Kegel, Colin Walsh, Lewis Welden and Travis DeJong each had a hit.

And as for Power? Juan hit and one run.
