WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. – With the NAFA World Series and ISC World Tournament two weeks away, this is the time for teams to start playing their best ball. The time to peak. And if their latest tournament is a forecast, then the Kegel Black Knights appear to be right on schedule.

The Black Knights swept through the 43rd Annual West St. Paul Men’s Fastpitch Tournament undefeated (5-0) and knocked off Wilber Lime of Galesville, Wisc. 8-0 in the final at the West St. Paul Sports Complex, July 19-21.

Sebastian Gervasutti threw a no-hitter with five strikeouts to pick up the game-shortened win for Kegel of Fargo, which is celebrating its 30th year in men’s fastpitch. The 28-year-old from Bilbao, Spain finished the tournament 2-0 with one hit allowed in 18 innings and 34 strikeouts.

“He throws hard with the up and down and some change up,” said Kegel player / coach Kyle Koterba.

West St. Paul men’s fastpitch league thriving in Minnesota

Monday, July 30th, 2012

An overview of the West St. Paul Sports Center where 12 men’s teams are still able to play fastpitch softball.

WEST ST. PAUL, MN – Give us a place to play during the week.

That’s a plea that many men’s fastpitch players and teams champion throughout the U.S. But finding a city league that offers weeknight games has become difficult throughout the U.S. as the men’s game has fallen off over the past two decades.

But not so in West St. Paul.

The city that borders the Twin Cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis has offered a city league, well, as long as any of the current crop of players can remember. And this year is no exception.

The West St. Paul League has 12 teams competing – from the “A” classified Minnesota Angels (ISC and ASA Major team) to several “B” and “C” ranked teams.

During the course of the season, which runs from April to August, the teams crossover and play each other.

Scott Emerson plays for the Blvd team, a C-team managed by Mike Fink. He’s a Wisconsin native who has played in his share of leagues. He likes what West St. Paul has to offer.

“The WSP is a 12 team league that is split up into two divisions,” he said. “There’s six B and higher teams and six C teams. I have played in Wisconsin and Minnesota and I would say this is the most competitive league I have played in. All of the teams are tough.”

Ball family supports Dad’s goal in West St. Paul Tournament

Friday, July 27th, 2012

“Wayne’s tournament is great. It’s the best. He knows how to run a tournament fantastically.” – Dave Vandenbosch, manager, Gallagher’s Bar

WEST ST. PAUL, MN – Forty-two down and eight to go.

For 42 years, 73-year-old Wayne Ball has kept the West St. Paul Invitational Men’s Fastpitch Tournament rolling along. Year-after-year without a miss.

Though he’s at an age when most fastpitch folks have long since retired, Ball has no plans on deserting his baby. His creation. His passion. Besides, he’s set a goal that he’s determined to meet.

“I have to go at least eight more years,” he said. “I’ve got to get to 50 years.”
