Plan now for 2019 LAS VEGAS ROAD TRIP XII men’s fastpitch softball tournament

Wednesday, December 26th, 2018

By JESSE ORTIZ
SCIFL President

LAS VEGAS – The So. Calif. Independent Fastpitch League (SCIFL) and the North American Fastpitch Association (NAFA) are pleased to announce the twelfth edition of the “Las Vegas Road Trip” men’s fast pitch tournament.

The event will be held April 12-14, 2019 with the first round games starting Friday at noon, and the Championship games scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday.

PLAN EARLY AND LATE

Teams flying in and out should make plans to be ready to play early on Friday and late on Sunday in the event the brackets are running late.

While this tournament is a NAFA sanctioned event, it is run by SCIFL; any questions regarding this tournament must go through the SCIFL Tournament Director Jesse Ortiz.

NAFA DIVISIONS

Teams will be separated in the following divisions: A, A-Major (depending on amount of teams), AA/AA-Major (depending on the amount of teams. The split in the higher classifications will be based on the amount of teams that enter.

NAFA PITCHER’S LIST

The NAFA pitcher’s list will be used to monitor pitchers in the tournament as well as the team’s current classification. No open class pitchers are allowed to pitch in these three divisions. Confirmation into the tournament will be based on the entry fee and roster received.

The classification list posted on the NAFA web site on January 31, 2019 will be the list used to classify pitchers. There will be no appeals for pitchers after that date for this tournament.

The NAFA 3-GAME GUARANTEE BRACKET will be used for all divisions. With a minimum of eight (8) teams in a division, the winner will have their 2019 NAFA World Series entry fee paid for the division they played in.

HOW SWEET IT IS! The Budmen of So. Calif. greet Robert McCarrie with jubilation after he hit a two-run home run to give the Budmen a walk-off 10-9 victory over Wololok, Calif. in the A Division of the Las Vegas Road Trip X men’s fastpitch tournament, Saturday, at Sunset Park. CONTACT AND PLAYING INFO

Teams interested in participating should contact Jesse Ortiz by email at scifastpitch (at) gmail.com or by cell at (661) 510-8928 and inform him if your team can play all three days. Teams that can play all three days will be placed on the priority list, teams that say they can only play on Saturday and Sunday will be placed on the secondary list. No one will be given a “selected” game time as everyone is traveling to the event.

HOW IT WORKS / MAXIMUM TEAMS

We are accepting 34 teams in total, but it may change. Teams will be placed on a list as first come first serve basis. Once the tournament is full, additional teams will be added to the waiting list and if they pay their entry fee (in full) they will have an opportunity to participate if a team drops out or does not pay by the due date. If a team on the waiting list pays their entry fee and is not able to get in, their entry fee will be refunded.

This tournament has been filling up quickly within the past couple of years so I would suggest you contact Jesse as soon as possible if you want to be added to the team list.

ENTRY FEE AND REGISTRATION

The entry fee for the tournament is $475, which includes the $35 Annual NAFA Team Registration Fee. We will start collecting the entry fee beginning January 2, 2019 and once it’s received you will be sent an email to confirm your entry.

All teams will need to submit their entry fee along with their team’s roster, listing all their players and identifying their pitchers to ensure teams are placed in their proper classification.

*** You can pay online by visiting our website (www.sciffastpitch.com) and clicking on the “Pay Online” button on the left hand side column or by check. OR pay by check made out to “SCIFL” and mailed to:

SCIFL
PO Box 6572
Burbank CA 91510

DUE DATE

If money is not received by March 1, 2019, a team may lose their spot to a team on the waiting list who has paid their entry fee. This due date will provide teams on the waiting list sufficient time to make appropriate arrangements to participate, if they get in.

FARGO – At his home ballpark in Southern California, Jesse Ortiz can be found hustling from one field to another. He’s an administrator, a resolver of disputes, he oversees the scorekeepers, and he even does some field maintenance when the need arises.

Ortiz is the executive director of the Southern California Independent Fastpitch League (SCIFL). It’s a job with a lot of duties and some headaches, but he sets all of that aside when it’s his turn to pitch.

He works diligently for long hours on several weekends throughout the fastpitch season to ensure that SCIFL Alliance tournaments run smoothly.

“The SCIFL tournaments went well this year,” said Ortiz, 42. “We did have to cut back on some tournaments because of a conflict with the city (Santa Fe Springs). We had one tournament at Camp Pendleton (Marine Corps Base) and that went well.”

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – They come from Canada, Mexico and the United States. They may have some cultural differences, but what the ball players of the 2017 Las Vegas Road Trip X have in common is talent.

Let’s meet some of the players and teams, and people who make the Las Vegas Road Trip tournament one of the most popular in North America.

KEEPING IT LEGAL: Las Vegas Road Trip X Tournament Director, Jesse Ortiz, tests a bat to make certain it is tournament legal. Ortiz said Sunset and Warm Springs ball parks are in great shape, and he credits the Clark County Park & Recreation Dept. for helping make Las Vegas Road Trip X a success. He added that interest was so high that he had to turn away several teams that wanted in the action. “We had 36 teams in the past, but (expanded) to 42 this year. There were five teams I couldn’t get in.”

The Rays won the 2013 Gold Medal in the Masters Division of the Maccabi Games in Israel, and will return in July for another go at the gold. “The Maccabi Games are the third largest sporting event in the world,” said Rays manager Morrie Frydberg. “We will be going to represent Canada. Playing in Las Vegas is a great tuneup for us. We are happy to be here.”

Heat fires a pitch during the Heats 10-9 victory over OPVS of Oklahoma in a first-round, A division contest in the Las Vegas Road Trip X men’s fastpitch tournament, Friday. Though Rooney is 64, he has no plans on retiring from the sport. In his younger years, he played every spot on the infield, but switched to pitching in his 30s. “Nobody else would so I did,” said Rooney. “I’ve never been fast, but I think I got smarter if that’s possible.” Photo By BOB OTTO
