United States defeats Australia for crucial win in softball world championship

Saturday, July 8th, 2017

WHITEHORSE, YK, Canada – The defense? Stellar. The pitching? Superb. The offense? Clutch.

Team USA put together an outstanding game to defeat Australia, 2-1, in the second round of the 2017 Men’s Softball World Championship at the Pepsi Softball Centre in Whitehorse, Saturday.

And it was without a doubt a team win.

Let’s start with the pitching.

Jeremy Manley started and went five innings giving up just two hits – one of them a first-inning home run to Nick Shailes that gave the Aussies the early lead.

Often, that’s all the run support Aussie hurler Adam Folkard needs. Considered by many fastpitch experts as the best pitcher in all of men’s fastpitch, he can be nearly impossible to hit with his 80-plus mph riser and drop.

VANCOUVER, BC, Canada – Team USA needed a big game from someone in the circle. And they got it from Tony Mancha.

The right-hander from Las Cruces, New Mexico delivered an inspiring, extra-inning, 2-1, victory over the tough South Hill Giants in the Vancouver Challenge, Sunday.

The win sends Team USA into the championship, where they will battle either Canada (5-0) or New Zealand (4-1), who square off in the final playoff game to determine who will face the Americans for the title.

Certainly, Mancha was the man of the hour. But in this sparse run-scoring contest, someone also had to step up big at the plate: Bryce Kay answered the call big time, hitting safely in all three trips to the plate.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Fastpitch teams count upon the top of the lineup to power the offense. The trio of Marcus Tan, Kevin Castillo and Derek Mason did just that in a most spectacular way by accounting for 5-of-10 California A’s hits, and driving in five runs in the A’s 8-2 victory over the Tavistock Merchants of Canada, Tuesday.

Tan – batting leadoff – was nightmare for the Merchants, scoring twice and going 3-for-4, including a double and RBI. Castillo, the No. 2 man in the order had one hit in two trips, but it was a big one: a two-run blast in the fourth that helped the A’s break a tie and surge ahead, 4-2. And not to be outdone, Mason, third in the A’s murderer’s row, accounted for two RBI with a base hit.

Rob Schweyer pitched well in helping the California A's defeat the Tavistock Merchants.

Meanwhile in the circle, starter Rob Schweyer and Josh Johnson teamed-up to hold Tavistock to two hits and one earned run. Schweyer pitched the first three innings, allowing two hits and one earned run with five strikeouts; and Johnson finished the final four innings, no-hitting the Merchants and striking out four to pick up the win.

The A’s Matt Christiansen, Jenner Christiansen (run, RBI) and Kris Waverick (2 runs) each had a hit, and Chase Turner had a good day at the plate as well, rapping out two hits in three trips and scoring twice.

For the Merchants, Ian Baer and Jeremy Munro each hit safely, with Baer getting an RBI single in the third.

The win improves the A’s to 2-1 and continues their journey of climbing back into championship contention through the losers bracket with the Northeast Drillers (2-1) scheduled for Wednesday.
