Comeback K-Club Claims NAFA World Series Title

Monday, September 17th, 2018

MOSES LAKE, Wash. – Winning championships doesn’t come easy in any sport. And so it is in men’s fastpitch softball. Just ask the K-Club squad of Moses Lake, Washington.

For ten years K-Club has steadily grown into a respected ball club, winning or placing in the upper echelon of club tournaments throughout the northwest.

The 2018 season can be chalked up as a resounding success. K-Club’s 26-12 record includes two second-place finishes in the Newberg, Ore. and Mt. Vernon, Wash. tournaments. And in the prestigious North American Fastpitch Association (NAFA) Seattle Invitational, K-Club claimed first place in the A-Major Division.

    Aiming High

But those tournaments were tune-ups of sorts. For the ultimate prize is winning a NAFA World Series championship – a destination K-Club has been aiming for ten long years.

And on Aug. 19 in Fargo, North Dakota, K-Club’s dream of a national championship was realized when they won five consecutive games to claim the 10-team, World Series AA-Division title.

“K-Club has progressively improved over the last nine years,” said co-manager Dan Kolda, who helped found the team with his sons Mike and Rickey. “We have had many successes, but the victory in the AA World Series, especially with all the comeback wins, has to be the most prestigious accomplishment for the program. The effort and contributions from each and every member of this team demonstrated what can be achieved when you have “heart!”

MOSES LAKE, WA – The last time a men’s fastpitch softball tournament was played in Moses Lake, Washington? Most likely a very long time ago. But that’s about to change.

Mike Kolda, a Moses Lake resident, and player / manager of the K-Club men’s fastpitch team is busy organizing the first annual “Columbia Basin Men’s Fastpitch Invitational.”

Paul Lauzier Athletic Complex

The tournament will take place May 12 to 13 at the Paul Lauzier Athletic Complex in Moses Lake. Registration deadline is May 7, and the entry fee is $350. Please see the attached flier Tourney Flyer for complete information.

“We want eight to 10 teams,”said Kolda. “It’s a four-game guarantee with three games played Saturday in round robin. The complex is in great shape, and there’s a lot of fun stuff to do here with a water park, golfing, and public parks.”

MOSES LAKE, WA – Pitcher Dan Kolda has enjoyed his share of success on the fastpitch softball diamond. The 55-year-old is an Amateur Softball Association (ASA) All-American. He’s won ASA and North American Fastpitch Association (NAFA) national championships. He’s also pitched in four International Softball Congress (ISC) World Tournaments.

And he beat one of the greatest fastpitch teams ever assembled in the history of the sport: The Guanella Brothers of Santa Rosa, Calif. (2-0) in the 1986 ASA Major National Championship.

In his still active 38-year career, he’s amassed a treasure trove of fond memories. But none will compare with the memories he’s building right now: playing with his three sons, Michael Kolda, Rickey Kolda and stepson Ryan Welsh on a ball club aptly named – the K-Club – K standing for Kolda, of course.

“It will rank up there in my career,” said Kolda. “I had this idea that it would be fun to have a team with the boys, but it was Mike that put the program together and built it.”
