Grand slammin’ Loggers take fastpitch trophy in North Dakota

    Friday, June 21st, 2013

By Britt Santowski – Sooke News Mirror

SOOKE, BC – Last year, the Sooke Loggers left the NAFA Open-Holm Classic with slumped shoulders after a deflating 9 – 8 loss in the final game against the Circle Tap Dukes. This year, after five undefeated games, the Loggers clinched the sixth for the ultimate victory, emerging as the new Classic title holders.

The championship was played over two days, Saturday, June 15 and Sunday, June 16.

On Saturday, the Loggers played three games, starting against the Kegal Black Knights followed by the West Fargo Knights and later that afternoon against Circle Tap.

Angels go long ball to power past Circle Tap in NAFA Open-Holm Classic

    Saturday, June 15th, 2013

FARGO, ND – As border state rivals, the Circle Tap Dukes of Denmark, Wisconsin and the St. Paul, Minnesota Angels came out swinging the bats Saturday morning in the opening game for both teams in the NAFA Open-Holms Classic.

But when the dust had settled, the Angels held off the Dukes 7-5 for the victory. Josh Wagner’s homer in the top of the seventh was the difference. With the game tied at five-all, Wagner (1-for-3, run, 2 RBIs), who bats No. 2 in the lineup and plays centerfield, belted a two-run blast that gave the Angels the win.

Young West Fargo Knights Climbing High in NAFA Fastpitch

    Thursday, June 13th, 2013

FARGO, ND – In 2008 a bunch of guys, many fresh out of high school, started a fastpitch softball team for the Fargo Fall League. Success was hard to come by in the early going, and they got knocked around a bit.

But steadily they improved, learning to hit risers and drops, learning to play the much quicker game than some of them had experienced with baseball.

Catcher and infielder, Matt Johnson, 27, who went through the struggles of those early years, said, “we just took our hits and kept going, and have moved on to where we are now.”

Now, going into their sixth season, many of those youngsters of the early years form the nucleus of the West Fargo Knights.

And what they accomplished last year is pretty amazing. The Knights swept through the 32-team NAFA A-Major World Series, winning six straight games, culminating with a 9-2 victory over K-Club of Washington to claim the title.

“They are a very good young team that can hit any pitch thrown at them,” said Rickey Kolda, who pitches and catches for K-Club. “They are the best team I’ve seen at hitting a pitcher’s (best) pitch. It was tough to call a game against them because it seemed that no matter what you called they hit that pitch hard.”

Circle Tap seeks to repeat in NAFA Open

    Wednesday, June 12th, 2013

Ten of the world’s top teams will battle for the championship in the NAFA Open – Holm Classic men’s fastpitch tournament at Fargo’s Lindenwood Park, June 14-16.

“We are happy to be a part of it and we look to repeat. Anything less, well it will be a kick in the pants.” – Circle Tap field manager Chad Huebner

FARGO, ND – The Circle Tap Dukes of Denmark, Wisconsin won the 2012 NAFA Open World Series championship. And they’re back again seeking a repeat in the NAFA Open – Holm Classic Tournament in Fargo, June 14 to 16.

Circle Tap comes into the tournament with a talented ball club ranked No. 8 in the world of men’s fastpitch softball.

Dukes field manager Chad Huebner knows that a high ranking and the title of “defending champs” might earn you respect for what you’ve done in the past.

But lofty rankings and past honors mean little in the here-and-now. Not when nine hungry and talented, championship-seeking ball clubs want to rip that crown off your head.

“Being the (NAFA Open) champs from 2012 (5-1), comes with a target on our backs,” said Huebner. “So we will have to get hot and stay hot with consistency in our pitching and hitting, and we will have to play stellar defense.”

Sooke Loggers reaching for top rung in NAFA Open

    Wednesday, June 12th, 2013

FARGO, ND – last year the Loggers of Sooke, British Columbia, Canada, threw their hat into the NAFA arena for the first time, liked what they saw, and are making a return engagement.

Sooke, which finished runner-up to the Circle Tap Dukes in the 2012 NAFA Open World Series with a 5-1 record, are one of ten teams competing for the championship in the 2013 NAFA Open – Holm Classic Tournament in Fargo, North Dakota, June 14-16.

For field manager Len Banner, the NAFA Open is one of two top men’s fastpitch tournaments his No. 15 ranked Loggers will enter this season.

“I told the boys that this may be the best tournament besides the ISC (World Tournament) that we play in this year and our heads will have to be in it from the first pitch till the last out,” said Banner, adding that the Loggers’ strength relies on speed through out the line up along with four or five guys who can hit with power.

NAFA Open / Holm Classic tournament promises top-caliber men’s fastpitch

    Tuesday, June 11th, 2013

FARGO, ND – Ten outstanding ball clubs are converging on Fargo for the 2013 North American Fastpitch Association (NAFA) Open World Series / Holm Classic that begins on June 14 and ends with the championship game on Sunday, June 16.

Just how good are some of the teams that represent four U.S. states and three Canadian provinces?

According to the International Softball Congress pre-season rankings, six of the 10 are ranked in the top 25 of all the men’s club teams playing in North America.

Heading the list is the hometown Kegel Black Knights at No. 7; Circle Tap of Denmark, WI, No. 8, and the Diamondbacks of Saskatoon Saskatchewan, No. 9.

Defending its 2012 title is Circle Tap which knocked off the Loggers of Sooke British Columbia, 9-8, in a thrilling come-from-behind victory. The Loggers are returning for a run at the championship.

The action kicks off Friday night at 8 p.m. between the West Fargo Knights and the Winnipeg Bullets.

On Friday and Saturday, the teams will compete in pool play. Comprising Pool A is Circle Tap, Randy’s A’s of British Columbia; the Minnesota Angels, St. Paul; Topeka Toros, Topeka, KS; and Rooters Bar, Fargo.

Pool B is just as formidable with the Sooke Loggers; Kegel Black Knights; Saskatoon Diamondbacks; Winnipeg Bullets, and West Fargo Knights.
