KITCHENER, ON, CANADA – Adam Folkard threw a shutout, the offense blasted three home runs, and the Six Nations Hill United Chiefs defeated the Bandits of Pueblo, CO, 6-0, Monday to improve to 2-0 in the 72nd ISC World Tournament.

Folkard went the distance, holding the Bandits to three hits, while notching 15 strikeouts. Only Pablo Figueroa, 2-for-3 and Nick Santos, 1-for-3, could catch up with Folkard’s offerings.

Chiefs’ Nicolas Carril (1-for-4) blasted a two-run home run in the second inning which held up until the sixth when Brad Ezekiel (1-for-4) and Bruno Motroni (2-for-3) each belted two-run homers – Ezekiel’s sailed well over the centerfield fence, while Motroni lifted his over the left-field wall.

The Chiefs opened tournament play on Sunday with a 13-0 win over Puslinch, and Folkard picked up the win in that game as well, firing a no-hitter with eight strikeouts in three innings. The game was called after four innings under the mercy rule.

Hill United is in the hunt for its fifth ISC World Tournament championship in the past six years. The Chiefs claimed three consecutive titles from 2013 to 2015. Then after finishing runner-up in 2016, they took the top spot again in 2017.

With the two wins, Folkard improved to 41 wins in ISC World Tournament competition since he began pitching in the world tournament in 2004, which moves him ahead of Korrey Gareau with 40 and into the 7th spot on the all-time wins list. Michael White (1980-2006) is currently the all-time leader with 70.

With the win, Hill United will play again on Tuesday at 5 p.m. against Nith River Monsters (3-0) who defeated Bear Bottom Lodge, 3-2, on Monday.

PUEBLO, CO – Some will claim men’s fastpitch softball is well past its prime. That it’s a sport wobbling and reeling on the ropes like an old, worn out boxer awaiting the knockout punch.

If you’re preaching this kind of blasphemy, beware: Because if this nonsense talk reaches the Santos boys – brothers Chris, Mike and Jerry, and the youngster, Nick – it will certainly cause a collective and menacing growl. And probably a stern reprimand.

The Santos, along with their late father Joe, have been playing this sport collectively for better than 150 years.
