Someone to know: fastpitch legend Nick McCurry

Monday, September 22nd, 2014

ASHLAND, Ohio – Nick McCurry will warn you about two things: A conversation with him will center on fastpitch softball and it will be long. He’s right on both counts.

“I’m a die hard fastpitch man,” said the 52-year-old McCurry. “I don’t drink and I don’t smoke, but I’ve spent many long hours in the beer tent talking to fastpitch people.”

McCurry’s soft, easy going Tennessee drawl, belies the fact that he’s an intense, fiery fastpitch player and manager, who, he says “loves to thump his chest” after beating one of the big money teams.

And McCurry proved he’s still one of the game’s great clutch players.

He was selected the Most Valuable Player in the 1998 ASA Masters 40-Over National Tournament after helping Eagle Products of Mishawaka, Ind. win the national title.

McCurry blistered tournament pitching with a .416 average and was 10-for-24.

“Over the many years Nick’s been one of the outstanding players in the state and carried the banner for fastpitch so very effectively,” said Ohio Fastball Travel League Commissioner, Gordon Wise. “He’s literally the heart and soul of fastpitch in Ashland.”

Junior Explorers: New program could produce next generation of Midland Explorers’ players

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

MIDLAND, MI – Young players like Auburn’s Jon Gwizdala are excited to be part of a brand-new program that could produce the next generation of fastpitch softball players for the Midland Explorers.

Gwizdala, 21, is a pitcher for the 21-and-under Midland Junior Explorers, who will play in the International Softball Congress 21U Tournament in Midland in August.

“It’s really exciting to be on the team,” said Gwizdala, who played baseball at Bay City Western and is a student at Delta College. “It’s exciting because it’s something new (on the fastpitch scene) and something new for the younger players.

Pick up the ball and toe the rubber

Friday, April 13th, 2012

Men’s and boys’ fastpitch softball – especially in the U.S. – desperately needs pitchers. And I mean anyone regardless of age (it’s never too late for you guys in your 30s, 40s, and even 50s to get started) with the desire to toe the rubber.

And in today’s fastpitch softball what an opportunity!

There are so few pitchers that once you can throw strikes you’re guaranteed of finding a team to play on. So pick up that ball and start throwing and practicing. The sport needs you, and what great fun you will have.
