Field set for 2016 NCAA Division I Softball Championship

The University of Minnesota softball team won the Big 10 Tournament, and now head to Seattle to play in the 2016 NCAA Division 1 Softball Championship, May 20-22.

The University of Minnesota softball team won the Big 10 Tournament, and now head to Seattle to play in the 2016 NCAA Division 1 Softball Championship, May 20-22.

In total, 64 teams will begin play May 20 at 16 regional tournament sites to begin the 2016 NCAA Div. 1 national softball championship playoffs. See Tourament Brackett

Heading the tournament is the No. 1 seeded Florida Gators (53-5), who will have their work cut out for them in their four-team regional hosted by the Gators in Gainsville that includes Alabama St. (27-24), Florida Atlantic (50-7), UCF (36-20), and UCF (36-20).

As the No. 2 seed, the Michigan Wolverinses (46-5) play host to Notre Dame (41-11), Miami (OH) (34-21), and Valparaiso (18-32).

No. 3 seed, the Oklahoma Sooners (47-4) take on Wichita St. (35-19), Tulsa (35-19), and Ole Miss (39-20) at Norman.

And No. 4 seed Auburn (49-9) will host Jacksonville St. (41-15), USC Upstate (42-13), and Oregon St. (30-18-1) at Auburn, Ala.

The eight super regionals winners will head for Oklahoma City and the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium – Oge Energy Field to compete for the national championship, June 2-8.

…The University of Minnesota (41-12) which beat Michigan in extra innings to win the Big 10 Tournament, travel to Seattle where host and No. 11 seed Washington (36-13) awaits, along with Weber St. (37-17), and North Dakota (38-13).

No. 5 seed and Pac 10 champions Oregon (44-8) will host Fordham (39-19), Long Beach St. (32-20), and the Baylor Bears (43-12) at Jane Sanders Stadium in Eugene, Ore.

SOFTBALL: Turang thrives as two-sport athlete

This is not a story for slackers.

Those unfamiliar with the concept of a full schedule will not appreciate the rare and challenging life of Brianna Turang, a junior at the University of Oklahoma.

Turang, from Corona Santiago High, is a softball player at Oklahoma. And a soccer player for the Sooners. And a very good student: “I know she was a 4.0 last semester,” said softball coach Patty Gasso.

Turang bubbles with enthusiasm over her full plate…
