Merriman’s hot bat helps Ostrander Norsemen shock the J&B Bombers in the ISC World Tournament

Monday, August 13th, 2018

KITCHENER, ON, CANADA – The Ostrander Norsemen of Ostrander, Minnesota pulled off an early upset in the ISC World Tournament by beating the ISC’s No. 4 ranked J&B Bombers of Los Angeles, 2-1, in the second round of the tournament, Monday night.

The Norsemen jumped out on top in the first inning on Ryan Merriman’s single up the middle that plated Matias Minigutti, who led off the game with a hit. The Bombers tied the game in the third when Yusef Davis, Jr. singled and later crossed the plate on an error. Then after scoreless fourth and fifth innings, Merriman, who swung a hot stick going 2-for-3, drilled a home run in the sixth for the go-ahead run.

Daniel Chapman made the run stand up by setting down the Bombers in the seventh with two strikeouts and an infield ground ball. Chapman of Farm Cove, New Zealand twirled a three-hit gem along with 15 strikeouts. But the Bombers Devon McCullough turned in a brilliant performance as well, giving up but three hits while striking out 17.

The Norsemen opened the tournament by beating the Bell Cartage Outlaws, 12-0, on Chapman’s no-hitter and 12 strikeouts.

The Norsemen (2-0) return to action on Wednesday against the hometown Kitchener Cubs, while the Bombers (1-1), last year’s runner-up in the tournament, must battle back through the losers bracket, and meet the Dolan & Murphy of Aurora, Ill. Tuesday night.

With significant turnover among teams in the off-season, the rankings have a different flavour than in past years.

New teams CanAm Twins and A1 Power will be contenders and squads such as Kitchener Hallman Cubs and Toronto Batmen are breaking into the Top 10 with some prominent roster additions.
