LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Tim Thornton drove in two runs, Bryn Redhead gave a gutsy performance in the circle, and Hector’s NAFA Selects of Denver, CO, held off Page Brake of Salt Lake City to take an 8-5 victory in the AA / AA-Major Division of the Las Vegas Road Trip X tournament at Sunset Park, Saturday.

The Selects hadn’t been hitting the ball especially well in earlier games, but they erupted for four runs in the first inning on Thornton’s two-run double, and added two more in the second and one in the fifth to get past the hard-hitting lineup of Page Brake.

“We started slow and they took a 3-0 lead on us,” said Selects’ manager Matt Thornton, younger brother of Tim Thornton, “but our bats came alive.”

SALT LAKE CITY – Mention the name “Page Brake” in men’s fast pitch circles and most will say, sure I’ve heard of them, or I’ve seen them play, or what a great team.

But for those REALLY in the know, they will go a bit further in dishing out the accolades. For this Salt Lake City ball club has quite a legacy.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Some of North America’s top NAFA A-Major men’s fastpitch teams will battle for the division crown Aug. 8-11.

Here’s a look at the 38 teams competing. This promises to be a wide open division. Good luck in picking a “top-four” finish.

    OTTO’S PICKS:

1. Page Brake, SLC, Utah – long time ball club that made some noise in the Pioneer Days tourney
2. Santa Rosa Fastpitch, Calif. – Mix of veterans and youth
3. Northwest Implement, Maryville, MO – Been on the rise since starting as a boys’ team
4. Sheddy’s, Monfort, Wisc. – Won the Wisconsin NAFA A two years running and took Wilber Lime to 14 innings in the semifinals of state AA / AA-Major this year before losing 4-3; and finished runner-up in 2012 NAFA A World Series.

On second thought maybe Sheddy’s should be my No. 1 pick. Hmmm…

“The Best of the West bucks the trend of encouraging teams and (players) to play down and encourages them to play up and take on the best.” – Dave Blackburn, Best of the West tournament director for 13 years.

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF – Many open level men’s fastpitch tournaments have vanished in Southern California. But there’s one that continues to survive, and many would say thrive: The Best of the West.

Come the first weekend in June, the Best of the West will celebrate its 23rd consecutive year in offering a tournament for “all comers,” as former 13-year tournament director (1998-2010), Dave Blackburn would say. Ten teams entered last year, and Blackburn and current tournament director, Clyde Bennett, are expecting another strong field.

But first a little background.
