LONG BEACH, Calif. – He’s young, he’s fast, he can drop down a bunt, slap or send a stinging line drive into the gap, and with his speed, he can cover the outfield like a cheetah.

Oh, one other thing, Yusef Davis in his few short years playing men’s fastpitch, has been smitten by the game. So much so, that earlier in the season, he paid his own way to play in the USA Softball Men’s Invitational Fastpitch Tournament in Ashland, Ohio in June.

The money he spent has paid dividends: He made second-team, All-Tournament and caught the eye of the New York Peligro Gremlins, a major men’s fastpitch team that finished the season ranked No. 8 by the International Softball Congres.

Peligro picked him up for the ISC World Tournament in Moline, IL, and the 22-year-old played very well. In his first game, he went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs, and overall, finished the tournament with a .375 average. Peligro went 2-2 and finished 16th in the 36-team field.

He was disappointed the the tournament came to an end in a 2-0 loss to the Kegel Black Knights of Fargo, ND. But he’s grateful for the experience and plans for more world tournament’s in his future. He added that facing the world’s top pitchers was quite an eye opener.

“The experience was unbelievable,” said Davis. “It’s a tournament I’ll never forget. The pitching was unreal. I faced Sebastian Gervasutti from Circle Tap Dukes and he threw really well, and had a good curve pitch and a sneaky drop pitch.”

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – In sports phraseology, it’s called being “in the zone.” A dimension so frustratingly difficult to achieve and attain where an athlete’s skill is at its mental and physical highest peak.

The Dodgers Clayton Kershaw has been in the zone. So has Stephen Curry of the Warriors and New England Patriots’ Tom Brady, and tennis star Roger Federer.

And on Monday night at the ISC World Tournament, pitcher Scott Lieph of J&B Painting stepped into the zone with them.

DES MOINES – The Kegel Black Knights needed an additional player for the NAFA AA-Major World Series, so they picked up Matt Darling. What a wise decision that turned out to be.

Batting leadoff, the right-side hitter blasted a solo home run deep over the left field fence giving the Black Knights a walk off 7-6 victory over the Topeka Toros in the bottom of the eighth inning in the NAFA AA-Major playoffs, Friday.

“Darling was our pick up for the weekend,” said Kegel manager Jon Lewis. “He’s a patient hitter and nothing flusters him.”

Kegel Black Knights in fastpitch for the long haul

2013 Marks the 30th anniversary of Kegel fastpitch in Fargo, North Dakota.

FARGO, N.D. – In men’s fastpitch, some teams stick around about as long as it takes a sprinter to run a 100-yard dash. They come and go in the blink of an eye.

But a few teams, like marathoners, stay the steady course. They’re in it for the long haul.

Count the Kegel Black Knights of Fargo in that class, for 2013 marks the 30-year anniversary that Jon Kegel has been sponsoring teams.

Kegel got into the sport in high school after an announcement came over the intercom to start a team. Just 18 at the time, he wasted no time in not only playing, but starting his own boys’ team – the Kegel Juniors.

“I thought it might be fun and totally fell in love with the sport,” said Kegel, 48, adding that he also talked his dad, David, who owned Kegel Sign into sponsoring a team for the Fargo men’s league. “He loved fastpitch and he loved supporting me.”

WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. – With the NAFA World Series and ISC World Tournament two weeks away, this is the time for teams to start playing their best ball. The time to peak. And if their latest tournament is a forecast, then the Kegel Black Knights appear to be right on schedule.

The Black Knights swept through the 43rd Annual West St. Paul Men’s Fastpitch Tournament undefeated (5-0) and knocked off Wilber Lime of Galesville, Wisc. 8-0 in the final at the West St. Paul Sports Complex, July 19-21.

Sebastian Gervasutti threw a no-hitter with five strikeouts to pick up the game-shortened win for Kegel of Fargo, which is celebrating its 30th year in men’s fastpitch. The 28-year-old from Bilbao, Spain finished the tournament 2-0 with one hit allowed in 18 innings and 34 strikeouts.

“He throws hard with the up and down and some change up,” said Kegel player / coach Kyle Koterba.
