FARGO – At his home ballpark in Southern California, Jesse Ortiz can be found hustling from one field to another. He’s an administrator, a resolver of disputes, he oversees the scorekeepers, and he even does some field maintenance when the need arises.

Ortiz is the executive director of the Southern California Independent Fastpitch League (SCIFL). It’s a job with a lot of duties and some headaches, but he sets all of that aside when it’s his turn to pitch.

He works diligently for long hours on several weekends throughout the fastpitch season to ensure that SCIFL Alliance tournaments run smoothly.

“The SCIFL tournaments went well this year,” said Ortiz, 42. “We did have to cut back on some tournaments because of a conflict with the city (Santa Fe Springs). We had one tournament at Camp Pendleton (Marine Corps Base) and that went well.”

The schedule is set for the SCIFL Masters Tournament, Saturday, July 16 at Little Lake Park in Santa Fe Springs.

SANTA FE SPRINGS, Calif. – The SCIFL Masters Tournament schedule is now set with the format a two-game round robin followed by a modified double elimination similar to Carson City (NAFA World Series).

SCIFLis a non-profit organization that only receives funds from the entry fee teams pay to cover the expenses of running a tournament. Once a team commits to the tournament the expenses are calculated and the field rentals are paid in advance. If a team has committed and then decides to drop out of the tournament, for any reason, they will be subject to the entry fee to cover expenses. The fees will need to be paid prior to any future SCIFL and NAFA tournaments to avoid the team’s roster (players) from suspension. SCIFL will take the team’s roster from the last tournament the team played and will place it on a suspension list if the cancellation fee is not paid. This means players from that team will not be able to play in any SCIFL and NAFA tournaments until the cancellation fee is paid, so please make sure when you commit you are committed to playing in the tournament.

Sincerely,
Jesse Ortiz

Love leads Lumar Goss to fastpitch softball

LONG BEACH, Calif. – As a youngster, Lumar Goss played two sports, football and basketball. He loved hitting people and putting a ball through the hoop. Baseball? No, he never played the sport.

So it stands to reason that fastpitch softball wasn’t even on his radar. That is, until he met the love of his life, Julie Castillo, and her fastpitch-passionate father Paul Castillo. Just 19 at the time, young Lumar had to make a choice: play a sport he never heard of, or give up the girl.

    LOVE ON CONDITION

“My wife’s father gave me the ultimatum, play fastpitch or I couldn’t date his daughter,” said Lumar with a chuckle.

But oh how his fastpitch world has changed.
