Willkomm Mobil finishes top-three in NAFA AA World Series

Tuesday, August 13th, 2013

DES MOINES – Wisconsin has a well-deserved reputation for fielding competitive fastpitch teams. Willkomm Mobil is one of the many. And they proved it in the 2013 NAFA AA World Series by finishing third in a strong field of 14 teams.

And perhaps with a little luck Willkomm of Kenosha could have won the title. They started strong by winning Pool A with a 3-0 victory over McCuen’s Pub and 11-3 over the Bronx of Saskatchewan, Canada.

That gave Willcomm a No. 1 seed into the AA division final, where they knocked off Rooter’s Bar, 3-0, and CPI Classics 7-2.

But then they ran into some tough luck, losing to enventual champion Wilber Lime 1-0 in the winners bracket final, and finally being eliminated with another one-run loss to runner-up Palazzo’s Java House, 3-2.

Willkomm finished 4-2 overall and placed three players on the All-World team, and one of them will be inducted into the NAFA Hall of Fame during next year’s World Series.

  • Jerrod Dulmes, .429 BA, 6 for 14
  • Mark Nelson, .421 BA, 8 for 19, 3 doubles, 2 home runs, 6 RBIs (Nelson also was 1-0 pitching with a 3-0 win over McQuen’s Pub, allowing three hits, six walks with nine strikeouts)
  • 2014 NAFA Hall of Fame inductee, Todd Lubkeman had a 3-2 record in 32 innings, allowing 19 hits, 11 runs, 8 earned for a 1.75 ERA, with 56 strikeouts

DES MOINES – Dan Wall of Wilber Lime out-dueled Todd Lubkeman of Willkomm Mobil for a 1-0 victory in the NAFA AA World Series winners bracket final.

Wall helped himself with a single in the fifth inning and later scored on Marty Becker’s run-scoring fly ball deep enough to right field.

Wall allowed but one hit – to Scott Beal – while striking out seven and walking none. Lubkeman was nearly as good. Through six innings he fired a three-hitter, gave up the one run, walked two and struck out four.

Wilber moves into the championship game Saturday night and will meet the winner of the losers bracket matchup between Willkomm, Palazzo’s and Napanee, who are left in the losers bracket.

WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. – With the NAFA World Series and ISC World Tournament two weeks away, this is the time for teams to start playing their best ball. The time to peak. And if their latest tournament is a forecast, then the Kegel Black Knights appear to be right on schedule.

The Black Knights swept through the 43rd Annual West St. Paul Men’s Fastpitch Tournament undefeated (5-0) and knocked off Wilber Lime of Galesville, Wisc. 8-0 in the final at the West St. Paul Sports Complex, July 19-21.

Sebastian Gervasutti threw a no-hitter with five strikeouts to pick up the game-shortened win for Kegel of Fargo, which is celebrating its 30th year in men’s fastpitch. The 28-year-old from Bilbao, Spain finished the tournament 2-0 with one hit allowed in 18 innings and 34 strikeouts.

“He throws hard with the up and down and some change up,” said Kegel player / coach Kyle Koterba.

The Stuhrs, a brotherly band of Wisconsin fastpitch stars

    Wednesday, July 3rd, 2013

HOLMEN, WI – In 1971 Bruce Stuhr laced up his spikes, grabbed his glove and trotted on to a fastpitch softball field. Little did he know that he had just paved a dusty path for his younger brothers to follow. Four younger Stuhrs have since trailed after their older brother.

After Bruce came David, then Larry and Allen, and finally Dan. They were a versatile bunch that could fill every spot on the field.

“Bruce and Larry played all six infield spots,” said Dan, 46, the youngest. “(And) I played all nine positions at one time or another.”

Dan added that Larry (2003) and Bruce (1997) were inducted into the Wisconsin ASA Hall of Fame. Bruce, 59, is retired, but in 1979 he was selected the ASA Great Lakes Regional Most Valuable Player for his .833 batting average (15-for-18), an honor he repeated in 1980.

Larry, 56, and still playing part time, has an abundance of accolades, too. An outstanding third baseman, he played on 11 state championship teams, and was an ASA All-American in Class A, Age 40-Over, and 45-Over. He hit 270 home runs with 1,300 RBIs, and twice was the Great Lakes ASA Class A Most Valuable Player.

“Larry was known for his clutch hitting and phenomenal defense,” Dan said. “He is regarded as probably the best defensive third baseman that most people ever saw.”
