DES Moines, IOWA – Dave Bruley found himself a fun hobby: clocking the deliveries of some of the world’s top pitchers. Bruley of Colorado is in Des Moines for the NAFA World Series with his son Joe, who plays for the Topeka Toros.

But in between games, he moves from backstop to backstop and aims his Juggs gun at windmillers.

“It’s a nice hobby,” Bruly said with a grin. “I’ve clocked a lot of pitchers with speeds in the 70s and 80s”

Here’s some of the top speeds Brule’s clocked:

  • Australian Andrew Kirkpatrick, 82 mph.
  • Canadian Nick Underhill, 80-plus.
  • New Zealander, Josh Pettett, 77 to 81.
  • Zane Siolo, 78

Bruley and his son will also be playing for Topeka in the ISC World Tournament where he will once again be clocking many of the world’s fastest pitchers. And he has one pitcher in particular he’s interested in.

“I want to clock (Australian) Adam Folkard, he’s (considered to be) the fastest.”

DES MOINES – The Kegel Black Knights needed an additional player for the NAFA AA-Major World Series, so they picked up Matt Darling. What a wise decision that turned out to be.

Batting leadoff, the right-side hitter blasted a solo home run deep over the left field fence giving the Black Knights a walk off 7-6 victory over the Topeka Toros in the bottom of the eighth inning in the NAFA AA-Major playoffs, Friday.

“Darling was our pick up for the weekend,” said Kegel manager Jon Lewis. “He’s a patient hitter and nothing flusters him.”

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND – It will take a lot for Zane Siolo to forget how he celebrated his 19th birthday – starting pitcher for the Samoan softball team and a (3-2) win over the United States at the 2013 TradeStaff World championships.

“Beating the U.S. on your 19th birthday is a pretty mean feat,” Samoa coach Chris Kohlhase said. “We are taking him out to dinner tonight and I am sure there will be huge smiles around the dinner table.”

19-year-old Zane Siolo hurled his Samoa National Men’s Team to victory over the U.S.

Siolo faced 19 batters, gave up three hits and took four strikeouts.

For Kohlhase to be two from two is pleasing.
